The paint is very chipped and can flake off by just touching it!

Answer
hey tony...

a small pressure washer capable of delivering 15-1800 pounds should be plenty - tip size is important also when pressure washing. the typical tip sizes are 40,25,15 & 0 degree tips...a 40 degree tip is similar in size to those used in self serve car washes - and that may be plenty for removing loose flaking paint. a 25 degree tip will put a little more force to the more stubborn areas without much fear of damaging the wood. a 15 degree tip is your chisel tip and should only be used on very difficult areas where paint is heaviest and adhering the tightest. a 0 degree tip, or an oscillating 0 degree tip, (or bullet point) should never be used on wood - it will damage the wood quickly.

if you're renting or buying a pressure washer for your job, the gpm is as important as the psi - a smaller, gas powered homeowner type of pressure washer may deliver 2-3 gallons of water per minute at 1500 pounds of pressure while a contractors model may deliver 7-8 gallons per minute at the same pressure (the homeowner electric models deliver approximately 1/2 - 1 gallon per minute and should probably be used only for car washes and light cleaning)...for the job you've described, the gas powered homeowner unit will work fine...

if you've never power washed before, it is a great way to prep a surface prior to painting or staining and will cut the prep time down considerably (and besides, they're kinda fun to operate)...if you use latex (acrylic) paint or stain as a finish, you'll need to wait only a day or so of warm weather before painting. and while pressure washing, be sure to wear rain gear and boots 'cause you will get wet...

good luck on your project and check out my previous post on how to finish wood fences.

Answer
Generally the higher pressure, not the higher flowrate, indicates better cleaning power.

My sink is 2.2 GPM. Can you convert in psi?

Q. My sink says it is 2.2 GPM. I would like to connect a small countertop dishwasher on it. The owner's manual says it needs to be between 15 and 20 psi (pounds per square inch). Is it ok?

THANKS :)
Can you convert knowing that it is a STANDARD KITCHEN SINK????

Please no stupid anwers like "no, you can't convert".
The following is engraved on my sink faucet "A112.18.1 2.2 GPM (8.3 LPM) MAX".

Answer
Not a stupid answer if it's true.

This link walks you through the averages found throughout the US.
http://www.ehow.com/info_12003745_normal-water-pressure-house.html

I think you'll be fine, if want to check, an $8 gauge like in the link can be used.
This one screws on outdoor hose bibb. If you're having it delivered, ask about it.

EDIT: As Answerers 1&2 graciously indicates, and with what is illustrated in links, determine.,
1- Water pressure - use a pressure gauge, If not within spec, read first link thoroughly

2=Rate of flow (GPM) - Find a empty container( IE- one gallon), turning on hot water to fully opened, fill container while timing, if container fills in less than 27.5 seconds your flow rate is over 2.2 GPM. I doudt flow rate will be that great. (if gallon container fills in a bit under 30 seconds, you should be fine)

Compare those two numbers (pressure and GPM) to washer specifications
convert to metric if you want

Is a 3000 PSI pressure washer dangerous?

pressure washer 8 gpm on Pump Pressure Washer | Parts for Pressure Washer

Can a 3000 PSI pressure washer do any serious damage or hurt someone? Obviously anything can if misused, but is this very powerful?

Answer
Most residential pressure washers are 1200 - 2000 psi.
3000 psi is pretty strong.
Volume is important also. 1 or 2 gpm (gallon per minute) is fairly easy to handle at higher pressures. 6 to 8 gpm would require safety equipment.

how much water pressure comes from a standard 5/8" garden hose?

steve_c_99

I'm looking to get a pressure washer and I'm not sure what psi to get. The hose cleans some of the dirt but I need more pressure so I'm curious .... what is the water pressure coming through a standard 5/8" garden hose?

Answer
The pressure of the water hose is not the answer its how much water volume you can get out of it for the pressure washer that's what you should be concerned about. There is only about say 25 or 30 lbs on your house maybe 35psi but what you want to be worried about is the gallons per minute that you can get out of it. The pressure washer will not care if it gets 5psi feed to it as long as it can get all or more of the gpm that it is designed to pump. Where I hook up mine I have an irragation hose bib that opens a little wider than the regular ones to be sure my pressure washer gets the gpm that it needs.
