Yeah I'm afraid Jimmy is right here. Good stain {oil based types} can penetrate deep into wood. With luck it was applied quick and thin and can be dealt with by a drum or belt sanding {caution these tools require practice and can gouge wood or separate strips off}. The Johnny Homeowner orbital sanders even with heavy coarse sand paper will give you carpal tunnel before you see any color change lol. Not that bad but after sanding a deck for three days you begin to think it. My deck is two elevations of 12 X 20 each and before I added the second tier I used Johnson water seal, Did you just hear a collective sigh from experienced deck fixer-uppers? lol That luckily sanded fairly easy being only one coat for one season. It did take me and the wife three days with an orbital sanders to complete it. At that point I made up my mind to do some research and get the right stuff.
Ironically I just started a rebuild on a winery here in the Napa Valley and was fortunate enough to hook up with the craftsman custom woodworker on site. {Quick reference the old building of the winery was built in 1889 using the biggest timbers of redwood I have ever seen between the floors. They pulled these timbers 14" thick and 36" wide and some as long as 20' and sent them to be milled for building all the wood applications in the new winery. Making some HUGE doors 14"X8'X10' high of the deepest looking wood ever} So in talking with this guy who was using a stain you can only get from Italy told me about his favorite stain/water-seal. It is called "Duckseal" and comes in various tones, water based, and not on the inexpensive side {$112.00 5gal 4 years ago} Yep 4yrs haven't touched it since. Sealed and stained beautifully, so much it spawned the second tier, a shadow garden, and two 6' high fences either side of house 60' each. {warning I did go cheap on fencing with cedar planks and am still kicking myself. It came out a different tone then the rest of the yard fyi} If you are able to remove enough to allow it to accept stain for a even color I would recommend "Duckseal" if not that then I recommend not cutting cost here or its back on the knees every other year lol. Electric pressure washers?

I have seen these Husky 1800 psi electric pressure washers at Home depot for about a $100.00 and I was wanting to know if these units are any good. I have read some user reviews on the Internet and have talked to some people about these and I am getting conflicting answers if they are any good. I was thinking about buying one to use around the home. Such as, cleaning the patio, porch, the driveway and so on. Any help will be appreciated. Thank You.

I used a Karcher 1500 psi model to clean a 100 foot driveway heavily soiled from oak leaves for 3 years and it worked great although a bit slow. Also used it to pressure wash a deck, garage and siding with no problems...I'd recommend them for minor jobs.

It should, but be careful. 2200 psi can do a lot of damage to wood. Using a good cleaner will help you immensely. Sherwin-Williams makes a great 3 part system for revitalizing decks. It starts with Stain and Sealer Remover. Use that to get the old finish off of the deck. The next step is called Revive. It neutralizes the remover, and cleans the deck. After this product, the deck will look brand new. Then you apply their Deckscapes stain. It comes in oil or latex based formulas, semi transparent or solid, and in a variety of stock colors. It's an excellent system, the only one I would ever use. Hope this helps.

Sam's club or walmart ene can damage wood if you hold it in one spot to long .you need a small electric one.you can also rent from a rental center

Insecticide in a pressure washer?

I am wondering what is a good sprayer for yard/garden insecticide and liquid fertilizer. I just finished pressure washing my deck and got to thinking it would be nice to have something like this -- electric and powerful -- for my yard, for my very tall fruit trees, 1-acre grass with ants, general fertilizing. I bet one could get that done in no time flat.

I have a Craftsman hand-pump which I was never, ever happy with from day one. I dread the thought of using it.

Anyone ever put anything like that in a pressure washer ?
On 2+ acres infested with ants, I think it's time to spray. I'm sure the 3 neighbors would prefer to see the lush green lawn I used to have . . .

Trust me, they won't/can't sue and wouldn't do that anyway, not like that here, thank goodness

Prune your fruit trees. Get those high suckers off. Tall tree do not produce much fruit,(especially on the higher limbs). These types of trees are being yanked for a more tighter intense production orchard.
The excess sucker growth just makes the tree weaker (and a weak tree basically gives off a scent that attracts bugs).

As for putting insecticide into a pressure washer.....you seem to have overlooked that insecticide and poison are the same thing. It will kill you just as well as a bug. You really want to be careful with it and not contaminate the entire neighborhood. Besides it needs to be ontop of the leaves, (not in them.) Same would apply to the fruit. A poison apple is not worth much to anyone.
Orchardists try using as little pesticides as possible.(it cuts into their profit margin)
I wouldn't use it for getting it out of the pressure washer will take ages.(and maybe the next thing you pressure wash is the picnic table).without even thinking about residue.

What size pressure washer is good for cleaning a deck?

Hi i am looking at buying a pressure washer to clean my deck and to clean my house i found a 2600psi for $299 and a 3000psi for $399 both have a Honda motor. I was planing on using it to clean a couple other houses and decks is it better to get the bigger one or should i stick with the 2600psi?

The cleaning power is roughly proportional to the PSI rating multiplied by the GPM. While the higher pressure might not be necessary for the tasks you are considering, the added cleaning power means you'll get the job done faster with the more expensive unit. Keep in mind that you can always add distance to reduce pressure (back away from the surface), but you can't add pressure that the unit doesn't produce.

I have tried to use an old 1500 psi unit that I already had to clean a concrete driveway, but just purchased the 3000 psi machine from a home store, and the difference is amazing. My evaluation was that the extra $100 above the 2600 psi unit was well worth the hours saved. And the Honda engine gets very good reviews from most of what I've read.

I would suggest also getting the surface cleaning attachment, particularly for your wood deck. It's not really powerful enough for a really dirty concrete drive, but would surmise that it is sufficient for the wood (you don't want that high of pressure for the wood). For cleaning concrete surfaces, I highly recommend the Turbo nozzle; it takes the 0 deg pattern and spins it in a 15-25 deg (or so) pattern so that you get the dislodging pressure of the 0 degree, but in a pattern size that allows efficient cleaning.

Cleaning a deck without a pressure washer?

Q. I have a small rooftop "deck" in Manhattan that is in serious need of cleaning. Being on the roof, though, I have no way of getting a hose up there, and if I tried, I'd probably be evicted. Are there any alternatives to spraying the deck with a pressure washer after using the deck cleaner? All of them seem very adamant about the "rinse with pressure washer" part. The deck is a 7' x 7' platform composed of 2 x 4's and rises about 7" off the ground.

You could use buckets of water and a brush. Or, seriously, try to time the wash just before a rain. I have done this with cars and driveways. Its the perfect season for it. Use environmentally safe products though.
