A friends pressure washer wouldn't start when he bought it. There were 2 places where you had to add oil. He only filled one and didn't notice the other. I found the other and we filled it and the thing started right up. Look for a 2nd oil fill.

How do I clean my boat bimini top without taking it off?

pressure washer wand parts on Pressure Washer 24 Extension Wand | Pressure Washer Suppliers
pressure washer wand parts image

Kristy H

The boat was stored for a while under trees in the heat and it now

Answer
I have a small Sears gas powered pressure washer I keep on my live-aboard boat. At a cost of about $200 (it was on sale) it is undoubtedly one of the best investments I ever made for cleaning my boat. It puts out a good amount of pressure (so you have to be careful not to get the wand too close, or you will rip, tear, or put holes in stuff). But it cleans everything! Will absolutely make your bimini top look brand new. I use it on my hull, sides, cabin, engines, canvas, deck, shoes, car, everything! No soap or chemicals required.

Happy & Safe Boating,
John

PS. Someone needs to invent a very small electric power washer you can use with one hand, at a sink, to clean small parts, tools, filters, shoes, hats, etc.

Do I need to replace the trigger gun on my power washer?

John

When I squeeze the handle on the gun, water runs all over the place. There is pressure but equal to that of a garden hose. The motor runs, but could the pump be broken? It's a Karcher model K360MR.

Answer
Contact the Karcher repair center. Typical problem is an "O" ring in the power wand trigger assembly fails. It's a small part probably less than $10 US. The last one I replaced was 10 years ago and it was about $5.

Why I have no pressure on my pressure washer?

Ken H

My pressure washer starts quickly, runs good, but my pressure stopped. Hoses not clogged, have water coming thru wand, but no pressure. How do I fix this?

Answer
If you've ever run the pump without water pressure being on it then you can suck the seals loose. Sometimes they will reseat, other times not.

When you last used it - if it was last year, before winter, and you didn't winterize it the seals may have dried out. Just about all hardware stores carry a seal conditioner for pressure pumps. It lubricates and conditions the seals while also removing water from the pump so if the weather freezes you don't crack the pump housing. I've bought many pressure washers that have experienced this problem. People in my area fail to winterize their pumps and end up with junk. They still have a good engine on them, but the pump must be replaced.

With your pump, check for leaks. If it's not leaking anywhere then that's a good sign. There is a pressure regulator on the outlet side that when there is sufficient pressure the high pressure water is diverted back to the inlet side. That's so the pump doesn't stall the engine or blow the hose.

CAUTION: IF YOU MESS WITH THAT SETTING YOU CAN DAMAGE THE PUMP OR EVEN DAMAGE YOURSELF. YES, YOU CAN GET HURT IF IT'S NOT DONE RIGHT. If you DO remove it, make sure you carefully count the number of turns to put it back exactly as it was before you took it off. There MIGHT be soap residue keeping the pump from building high pressure. The water can be going in circles.

There's a lot to pressure washers you wouldn't think of. These are just a few possibilities.

Best of luck with your project. AND BE CAREFUL.

how do i change the oil on a troy bilt pressure washer?

Randi M

I need help finding out where the oil plug is located on a troy bilt pressure washer model number 020344 before I can change the oil. I would like to do this before I use it this summer.
Thanks for any help.

Answer
The manual states you can change the motor oil from the top by tipping it over and drain it from the dipstick hole with the air clearer side up as you tip it. You can drain it from the bottom by removing drain plug with a ratchet and square extension, oil can be drained from engine bottom. Also you must change the pump oil every 50 hours or once a year according to the manual. To change the pump oil, use a 8mm allen wrench to remove black pump oil cap between high pressure outlet and garden hose inlet. I have this pressure washer and I change the oil from the bottom. There is no drain hole near the dipstick on mine

What kind of pressure washer should I rent to power wash a deck, and what will the approximate cost be?

Job Seeker

I've volunteered to pressure wash a friend's deck that is approximately 20' L X 8' W. I want to complete the job in one day since the house is 100 miles from my home and I'm only going to stay over one night. I know that pressure washers are rated by the number of PSI (pounds per square inch). Can anyone tell me how many PSI I should get in a rental? Is my hope to finish the job in one day realistic? The deck boards are pretty dirty due to lots of trees all around. Any other advice would be welcome.

Answer
In my opinion a 2000 to 2550 PSI unit would do the best job for you.
This would give you enough cleaning power to not be all day getting it done, and gentle enough to not rip the wood apart from extreme pressure.
Start on a surface not easily seen until you get used to the machine, and use straight even strokes slightly overlapping as not to streak the deck

Mail order might be the only way to fly in this case.

How do I figure the size for Pressure Washer gun Steel ball check valve?

danbo

Hi, I have a cheap Anlu pressure washer (Harbor Freight special from a couple years back) which had the inlet fitting on
the gun break after about 2 hours of use. Well, I was able to get a
replacement fitting, but somehow when I took the gun apart, the steel
ball for the gun valve fell on the garage floor and bounced into
obvlion. I looked for about 2 horus and couldn't find it. Anyway, I
can't get any help from Anlu, and all I want to do is find a stainless
ball the right size to fit. I'm in Portland, OR and don't know of a
local steel ball retailer, so I was going to order some on the web,
but I don't know what size it is. I suupose I could guess, or how can
I figure out from the valve seat how big the ball should be. I figure
it's got to be a pretty common size (probably metric, somewhere
equivalent to about 1/4", I would think).

Answer
A really good hardware store will have these, It is probably 1/4- 5/16" Take the valve to the store and try both sizes

What's the best electric pressure washer for my money?

auntgnu62

I'm looking in the $100 to $175 range. I've seen the reviews for Campbell-Hausfield,the $99 model is better than it's next one up.Husky 1800 is best rating so far all around at $170. Karcher wasn't getting any good reviews.I don't know much about Simoniz ones.I'm cleaning aluminum awnings to repaint;I need to clean my driveway and the house of Arkansas dust.It gets caked on everything!

Answer
There is not a single brick manufacturer nor any concrete engineer that will ever recommend using a power washer. And on wood surfaces those things are pure murder. Even on aluminum siding or awnings, those things are not good whatsoever.

What that does is destroys the surfaces of brick and concrete and it is subject to moisture penetration and loses its barrier against further dirt repulsion. It actually pitts the surface of most materials including your painted wood and leaves it in a sorry state.

Your best washer is a regular pump and a brush or broom where you can use a strong detergent solution. Liquid deterget is best as it disolves in cold water and an ordinary booster pump on a water supply along with a good long brush to scrub the surface does a good job cleaning without destroying your house.

Those are the facts. Why these machines became so popular in view of the fact that they are so destructive is a question that many manufacturers of brick, concrete, and wood, plastic, and aluminum are asking.

If you have a really dirty awning, or a grease laten concrete driveway, a steam jenny is a tool that works well and does not destroy the surfaces. You can rent one of those at your local rental. The cost of a really high pressure washer driven by a gasoline engine will give you a lifetime of steam jenney rentals and you dont have to store a machine in your garage and worry about a gas engine going bad either.

Should I buy an American car or a Japanese car?

pressure washer valve kit on Pressure Washer Easy Start Valve, EZ Start Valve Pressure Relief.
pressure washer valve kit image

Tiger L

Are the parts for a Japanese car more expensive? Thank you in advance for any help.

Answer
Buy a japanese car. American cars get cheaper faster, most are made of low quality. Get a nissan sentra spec v or honda civic ex. They are more efficient, decrease in price slower and last longer.
DO NOT rice it please. If you want to modify it, modify the engine. If you want a good exhaust, get a dual or quad exhaust setup.
If you want brake calipers disk rotors etc, get brembo. if you want tires (rubber) get pirelli.

What ricing is:
Ricing a vehicle is meant to emulate the aesthetic work of independent automotive car tuning companies who modify more than just appearance, and to give an appearance of greater ability than the car actually has. Ricing is generally looked down upon amongst people who perform engine tuning and other performance racing modifications.

Common aftermarket modifications in this style can include but are not limited to:

Body modifications
Aerodynamic-seeming or creatively-designed body kits, often with little function
Wings and spoilers that serve no useful function (especially if the car is front wheel drive), possibly increasing drag and decreasing traction.
Carbon fiber hoods (sometimes fiberglass replicas made to look like carbon fiber, or just decorative self adhesive plastic with carbon fiber look)
Non-functional hood scoops and roof scoops.
Excessively large wheels ("rims") (for example chromed, or "dubs", as well as spinners) that often decrease acceleration due to higher rotational inertia. Handling is also often made worse by the extra unsprung weight.
Improperly lowered suspension, such as stock springs shortened by heating or cutting or from getting improper alignment resulting in excessive negative camber.
Bumper canards fitted to the front bumper.
Aesthetics
Bright paint or interior, frequently in contrasting colors
Decals and stickers for aftermarket parts not actually present on the vehicle. A common joke is that every decal "adds 10 horsepower" to the car.
Badging from other higher-performance vehicles or JDM tuning companies like Mugen, Nismo, etc.
Digital turbo, consisting of speakers installed under the car that emulate the sound of a turbo engine.
A loud, free-flowing exhaust system with a large cylindrical resonator at the rear of the car, known as a "fart cannon", a "coffee can" and many other colorful names. Frequently a short large-diameter piece is added to the end of the stock exhaust to provide the appearance of a true free-flowing system without any actual performance enhancement.
A turbocharger simulator that fits inside the exhaust tip and uses exhaust gas pressure to produce the high-pitched "spooling" sound of a turbocharger.
Lighting
Decorative neon and LED lighting in addition to the regular head/tail lamps and brake/turn signals, such as lighted windshield washer nozzles and tire valve caps, underbody neon lighting ("hover lights"), etc.
"Altezza"-style lights or "Altezzas" (equally popular and known as "Lexus" lights in Europe), which have the colored light sources and reflective bodies contained within chrome housings and clear lenses. The term "Altezza" comes from the JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) Toyota Altezza, known in the US as the Lexus IS300 and Europe as the Lexus IS200. Toyota continues to use "Altezza" style tail lights on various Lexus models, including the RX "crossover SUV" and ES sedan
Super-bright headlight bulbs, sometimes of illegal specification and poorly aligned; colored bulbs, also often illegal, which are used for turning signals, side-markers, etc.
Car has any of the aforementioned modifications, yet appears to have sloppy workmanship or has not been properly cared for (dirty, parts of the car with smashed or dented body work, etc.)

How to fix a leaky faucet?

D

There is a problem with my kitchen sink...
everytime we turn the water on all this water starts spilling onto the counters....
I took a look at it, and the water is coming out from the knobs- hot water from the hot water knob, and cold water from the cold water knob....
and it only does this when we turn on the faucet...when it's off, it doesn't leak...

How can I fix it?

thanks in advance...
And I want to know how, if I can, do it myself...I am aware that plumbers exist...(:

Answer
Your description of hot and cold "knobs" suggests conventional valves [also called "faucets"]. The conventional faucets have a handle attached to a shaft [called a "stem"], which goes down through a large nut with a hole in the center for the stem.

If that nut has "flats" on it [usually 6 sides (hexagonal)] then that nut is called a "packing nut." The reason they are called packing nuts is that beneath them is a bunch of soft material called packing. The purpose of the packing is to keep water under pressure from coming out around the stem when the water is on.

On "old" faucets, the packing material is just Cotton string [in the REALLY OLD DAYS it was Asbestos string] impregnated with a greasy, tar-like material, and on newer faucets the packing string has sometimes been replaced with a rubber-like washer shaped sort of shaped like a cone with a hole in the center.

To prevent leaking when the water is on, the packing nut has to be tightened down on the packing just enough to squeeze it tightly enough around the stem, just enough to prevent leaking, but just loose enough to allow turning the knob and stem easily.

I first suggest trying to tighten the packing nuts slightly, just enough to prevent the leaking. If tightening will not stop the leaking then the packing material will need to be replaced.

To prevent slipping which will damage the Chrome or other plating on the packing nuts, use a wrench which intimately fits the nuts, and thus reduce the chance of slippage, and allows you maximum control of the pressure you apply to the nuts. I prefer an adjustable wrench [one common brand name is "Cresent Wrench"], but it is crucial that it be properly adjusted to fit the nut tightly to reduce the chance of slipping. USUALLY, these nuts tighten by turning clockwise, and loosen/remove by turning counterclockwise.

To adjust, one at a time, turn the packing nuts clockwise [about 5 rotational degrees at a time] while the faucet is open and water is running. Watch for the leakage to stop. It helps to have a "helper" with a rag or sponge to be constantly removing leaking water as you adjust. This is not necessary, but makes it easier to tell when the packing nut is tightened enough. When it stops, you have tightened the packing nut, and packing material below enough.

Boatalot

I want to do my deck, sidewalk, side of house... what do you put in the tanks for DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS? Such as wood/ aluminum siding/ etc?

Answer
There really is no one size fits all solution for cleaning. Deck cleaning should be done with a soium percarbonate based cleaner. Vinyl siding cleaning with something containing non ionic surfactants and sodium metasilicate (and bleach). Rust on a foundation needs an acid like oxalic. Sidewalks need a combination of bleach and caustics like sodium hydroxide. Cars need something gentle.

Be careful with running cleaning chemicals through whats called an "upstreamer". This pushes the chemicals through your pressure washing pump and will corrode it. Look for something called a "downstreamer" to apply chemicals. It goes on your pressure washer after the pump.

There are good products made for homeowner duty and distributed under the "Zep" line of cleaners. Look for them at Home Depot.

Where can I rent a power washer for cleaning a mobile home?

LKJH

Answer
Home Depot would probably be the easiest and most convenient location. If it is your first time using a power washer, be sure to understand the safety precautions of your particular machine. To avoid damaging surfaces, keep the wand a safe distance away from the mobile home exterior when washing. Many companies suggest "low pressure washing" for building exteriors, using a chemical or detergent and lightly rinsing off. You could also consider hiring the job out to a professional powerwash company in lieu of renting or purchasing a machine. Search the internet and get a couple of quotes. Best of luck!

Engine runs fine. Very low pressure comes out of the hose. I think it's something to do with the pump. Can I adjust or remove something to get more pressure.

Answer
Check your water inlet to the pressure washer. If water is restricted it cannot build pressure

Make sure you have the right tip and it is working properly. A pressure washer is designed to put x amount of gallons through x size hole to produce pressure.

Try adjustment near number 26 which appears to be an unloader. Line drawing is very poor best guess.

The valve would be under a hex nut on the pump head and if debris is in them pressure will fail. They are a spring seated assembly. they come out after the cap is off with a pair of needle nose pliers

With a better line drawing I could offer more advice but again the drawing is very poor.

I would not recommend try to remove the pump from the motor as it appears to be a wobble plate which are spring loaded and difficult for an experienced repairman to reassemble

Water in oil - pressure washer pump?

eight_kind

I have got water in my pressure washer pump oil. Im sure this means the seals are gone, but why isnt it leaking water out from between the head the the crankcase and onto the ground? But yet it can still push water into the crankcase? I dont understand that part. Do i have a problem other than the seals? The pressure is kinda low, 4000psi unit, 4gpm and only running 2300 psi or so with a 4.5 nozzle. Should be about 3500 i think with that nozzle. I did adjust the engine speed down a little but not too much. Pressure does build up to a little over 4000 psi according to the gauge when the trigger is released and the unloader goes to bypass mode. Please help!?

Answer
the crank case it self is a two piece unit and there is a gasket there

Bug shit on my house vs a pressure washer?

I have these tiny black dots on my siding, which have been multiplying over the years, and I just know it's bug shit. Got out my power washer and can blast off most, but not all. I thought about vinegar but that would destroy my my power washer I'm pretty sure.

Has anyone had to deal with these little turds on your house? HA HA! I'm going to coat my house in poison when I get the turds off.

Answer
They make a washing liquid just for siding, even aluminum siding. Check with your local hardware store. Get one of those extendable poles and a painters tray to hold the liquid that you mix with water. Then just wash instead of painting your house. After you wash an area spray the stuff off. You can wrap an old sock or towel around the end of the pole to hold the liquid and act as a scrubber. Have fun.....

is a 2000 psi electric pressure washer good enough to clean siding and wood deck?

pressure washer 3500 image

I am looking at purchasing a 2000 psi electric washer and want to know if that will be good for cleaning my wood deck and aluminum siding on my house? i also would use it for other smaller misc. cleanings.

Answer
the 2000 psi washer may cause a bit of damage if used too close to the wooden deck, but if used wisely and not on a too long deck it will be effective. If you take the nozzle too close you might see splinters especially if the wood is not very well seasoned. For a siding this will only be effective if the siding is small and neither very wide nor very long.
Best to use an adjustable washer where you can adjust the pressure and then buy something in the range of 3500 to 4000 psi maximum power. Depends on your budget!
To have a little extra power will help you use the washer for long time and will somehow minimize the maintenance.
Best of Luck!

has anyone ever rented a pressure washer? where did you rent one from and about how much did you pay?

Mono

the home i am renting needs a good cleaning! so i was thinking of doing that this weekend. not sure if i should go to Lowe's or home depot..... thanks for your input!
oh yeah how did it work did you just hook it up to a hose? i have well water does that matter?

Answer
Most rental yards have pressure washers. Its been a long time since I rented one. I would expect to pay $40-50/day. It hooks up to a regular garden hose. The only concern is if your well has enough gallons per minute for the washer to work properly. As a painting contractor I pressure wash many houses and decks every year. My big pressure washer is rated for 4 gallons per minute, my smaller one is 2.5 GPM. Before I hook it up I time how long it take the hose to fill a 5 gallon pail. If it takes longer than a minute I know not to use the bigger machine.
I don't recommend the rotating tip for beginners. Its true that it can do the job faster but it can do lots of damage if you are not careful. Sometimes the rotating feature gets stuck and leaves you with a narrow high pressure stream. Play it safe and use a 25 or 40 degree fan tip. Keep the water moving without stopping in one spot. That can cause damage if the water gouges the wood.
Most of the houses I work on have well water. I find about 1 in 10 don't have enough flow to use my 3500 psi, 4 GPM machine. I have only found 1 where I couldn't use my smaller washer.

I am afraid it will peel or scratch the paint. Its a gas powered pressure washer not sure of the psi though. I'd like to clean up some of the under carriage
2500PSI is what it says

Answer
it wont if you keep a safe distance from the car and don't aim it strait inwards on the paint, other wise if there are any weak spots in it or loose spots on it ,it will blow the paint right off of it,i accidentally hit mine in the wrong place and it blew strait though to the primer on one spot, and it will also remove the pin striping on one,2500 pounds per square inch is a lot of pressure, and can damage one, always go at it on angle and from at least a safe distance to be sure about it,i never get no closer than 18 inches to a foot from mine now, good luck.

I have a AR 383 (blue clean) pressure washer which it came with a detergent bottle (which I find it useless). I want to replace the hose and as upgrade the gun with the wands. Anyone recommends me a good pressure gun to buy where I can attach a foam cannon and as well with good wands. Also I would like to replace the hose in order to make it compatible with the pressure gun.

Answer
The AR Blue Clean line uses proprietary connections so that you cannot use standard hoses and guns as replacements. This is like what Apple does with the iPhone. Fortunately, there are some adapters out there. Home Depot sells one, I'll put the link in my sources below. With this you could now attach standard hoses and guns/accessories. BE makes good guns and foam cannons, and goodyear makes good hoses. There are many other quality guns and hoses out there as well, BE's are just easier to find than some of the others.

Gas Karcher pressure washer won't "Kick-In"?

Michael L

I have a Gas Briggs and Stratton/Karcher pressure washer. When I pull the trigger on the wand, the unit does not "kick-in". Sometimes if I play with the trigger, on and off very fast, it will start to pressurize.

I have replaced the hose and trigger with slightly better results but not a remarkable change.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Mike
I did some research on the unloader valve as suggested below and found the following solution:

Look for a black plastic cover with a silver snap on top; pry off the silver snap and lift off the plastic cover; next remove the two screws on the top plate then pull out the piston inside - if unable to lift piston out, start unit (with hose attached) and watch it pop out - coat piston with lithium grease (I used white grease) and reinstall.

Answer
check the unloader valve

What kind of soap fluid does a Husky Power washer need?

I have a gasoline Husky pressure washer. What type of soap fluid do I need? Model number is HU80432A.

Answer
The user manual says "Use only detergents designed for pressure washers; household detergents, acids, alkalines, bleaches, solvents, flammable material, or industrial grade solutions can damage the pump. Many detergents may require mixing prior to use. Prepare cleaning solution as instructed on the solution bottle."

Searches at a few web sites for pressure washer soap returns hits. Home DePeau has a 'packet' thingie that looks like it'd get pretty expensive if you need much. Walmart has a few options.

The main intent of this is that you don't use any solvents, acids. alkalines, bleaches that might damage the *pump*.

Since this is the kind of thing that you're going to be blowing soap all over the landscape I'm a big fan of Simple Green and other environment-friendly biodegradeables, so I looked that up too. The first URL below has a whoooole page of SG FAQ, including power washer. See that for details about dilution, eye protection, and watering lawn afterward to push the residue into the ground.

Ahhhh, the simplegreen.com site says they have a pressure washer specific cleaner. Doesn't say what's 'different' about it though. There's a FAQ page that says "Pressure Washers & Power Washers â Are Simple Green® products pressure washer safe? Simple Green is pressure washer safe. Simple Green also offers products specifically designed for use in pressure washers. These pressure washer concentrates can be located on the Products page of the Simple Green website.

The third URL is a press release. Actually they have a whole *line* of pressure washer specific stuff for different purposes. But again they don't really say what's 'different.' Unless they say something specific, it's all marketing-speak to me designed to sell more stuff. YMMV.

Should I wash my rug at the car wash?

PlasticTre

I got the idea from my friend. He said that's how he cleaned his mom's rugs.

One of my dogs has white hair and sheds a LOT. There are white hairs embedded in the rug that I can't get out with the vacuum or carpet cleaner.

If I use the pressure washer at the car wash.. will there be any drawbacks? Can it damage the rug? *It's a huge cheap rug anyway from walmart*

Answer
Sounds like a good idea but the only thing is it's going to be sopping wet, how are you ever going to get it dry. If you have a truck you could put it in the back of it once clean then take it home and hang it over a fence or something. Good luck!:)

I would just shampoo it with a shampooer.

Is it ok to run bleach though a pressure washer?

hello, this weekend i am pressure washing a aluminum sided house, and we are using TSP mixed with Bleach to remove the green "algae" from the sides, i was wondering is it ok to run diluted bleach through a pressure washer without harm being done?

Answer
You will be fine. Most good power washers have a "crows foot"attachment for this--you just put it in the bucket or jug of whatever solution you are using and it draws it into the water stream, diluting it as it does it.
If you have concerns about the residual bleach in the washer just run plain old water through it for a minute.

Can you use a pressure washer attachment on a regular water hose or is the high-pressure machine needed?

My needs are modest. I simply want to do things like reach some high spots on my house to get rid of spider webs, or light dirt.

Answer
By an attachment I assume you mean the WAND and SPRAY TIP for the end of the hose.

The distance the water travels and the force that it cleans with are directly related to the PRESSURE, as is the volume of water that discharged.

If you reduce the pressure to that of a Garden Hose Spigot on your house your reach is correspondingly reduced.

The bigger issue for you is that the Pressure Washer Wand does not have the same threaded connections as a Garden Hose, and some do not have common connections.

If you are not prepared to purchase even the lower pressure range household pressure washers, sold by people like Home Depot or Walmart for as little as $85.00, then you might want to try a Lower cost alternative to a Pressure Washer Wand first.

There are Garden Hose WATERING Wands, up to 48" long, with Female Garden Hose Thread on the inlet and Male GHT on the outlet.
You can also buy short SWEEPER nozzles with GHT that have a small diameter outlet that concentrate the flow and maintain the pressure in the line. This works like when you were a kid squezzing off the flow at the end of the hose with your thumb and the water shoots farther, or in simple terms restict the flow and the water pressure behind it increases (up to a point).

I have seen these in Garden Supply stores, Hardware Stores (seasonally) and Home Supply stores, like Lowes and Home Depot (seasonally).

Another nozzle that can restrict the flow even further is an Adjust-a-Power Nozzle, which is a short twist nozzle that has an interior rubber tube pinched by bearings to create a finer stream with the most hitting force and reach possible from the 100 PSI or less available from your household water supply.

Keep in mind that the smaller the nozzle orifice the smaller the flow rate, at a given pressure, and if it is the volume of water you are depending on to do the cleaning, you may take a while.

If you go the route of a traditional Pressure Washer Wand and tip, you will need to make sure you get an adapter (or a series of adapters) to convert to the thread needed for the inlet connection on the Pressure Washer Wand. That done you are again limited by the 100 PSI or less available from your household water supply.

Good Luck
