Is it safe to power wash your engine compartment when you wash your car?

pressure washer manifold on Pressure Washer Pump Much Oil
pressure washer manifold image

tctiv

I'm afraid of breaking anything mechanical or electrical if I use the power wash, but I can't think of any oother way to give the engine and everything else under the hood a good cleaning. Thank you.

Answer
no at the pressure that the washer uses, so many things can go wrong. you can force water and detergent into small areas in the engine, you can short out several areas in the electrical systems, you can force water into the intake manifold, or the oil pan. if you can adjust the pressure down quite a bit, you should be ok, but avoid the ignition system.

Why does my shower water get suddenly very hot?

snuhbidubl

I'll be in the shower with the water on lukewarm when for no reason it will start coming out scalding hot for about 20 seconds and I have to move out of the water's path until this is over. Adjusting the knobs during the hot water burst doesn't help because by the time I adjust it, the burst is over.

I'm the only one in the house so it's not someone else flushing a toilet or running a sink or anything.

Anyone know what the problem might be?

Thanks.

Answer
I get this complain it apartment maintance. I'm assuming you have a shower with a seperate knob for hot and cold water. Your knobs are attached to valve stems. At the end opposite the knob is a round rubber BIBB WASHER held on the valve shaft with a bibb screw.. One cause could be a loose bibb washer on the cold stem that moves back and forth and blocks cold water flow as pressure in the main fluctuates. It can block cold water so all you get is HOT water (and blisters). Yoy have to shut off the cold water to that valve or maybe the whole house to remove the valve. (Trust methis is a must.) then you can remove the handle, the tube between the handle and the wall and access the valve. But before you remove the valve, turn it on the bleed off pressure in the line and to ensure it is shut off. Okay, the valves I work on can be removed with a13/16th spark plug socket. take the valve out and see if the washer is loose. Replacing the washer is good since you're in there. Also shine a flash light into the manifold (where the valve was screwed in and see if there is any debris like lime or mineral deposits. Smear plumber grease on the valve theads and re-install. Be sure to start the valve by hand so you do not cross thread the valve and trash the manifold. Tighten up the valve. Install tube and handle and see if this cures the issue

Due to an old roomates German Shepard, and his propensity to scratch, urinate and deficate on my deck, I have to pressure wash it before resealing it, and I also need to pressure wash the patio beneath it. This gives me an excuse to buy a pressure washer. I know nothing about these things so... What is the best model under $300 that will take care of buisness?

Answer
Karcher 2400 PSI, Honda gas powered, from Costco, $299. Sorry, it seems that this model is no longer made. A co-worker recommended this model and I've been extremely satisfied. The electric models are not much better than a good high pressure hose nozzle. The closest I can find is Karcher 2500 PSI Pressure Washer w/ Honda Engine $399.99

How to clean vinyl siding?

just a lon

I would like to clean the siding on my house. I am interested in buying a power washer to do the job. How many psi does the washer need to have? I plan to only use it for this purpose so I don't want to spend a ton of money on it. Any other tips would be appreciated as well.

Answer
There are many things you can use a pressure washer for.
You can add detergent and wash your car,
you can wash your windows on the house,
You can clean graffiti off of walls,
you can clean decks and sidewalks and driveways...
It is a very useful item.
And with all the different heads you can get,
there's a multitude of jobs you can tackle.
I bought a Craftsman for $350.00 from Sears.
I used it to prep houses that I was painting,
and I painted a LOT of houses.
I don't recall the PSI.
Probably around 2500.
The ones with Honda engines are the best in my humble opinion.
Mine had a Briggs and Stratton engine.
Not as good,
but it got the job done.

Answer
Suggestion #1 Department stores such as Walmart of Kmart sell frames or what look like a skeleton of a hat. You place your hat on top of this frame when washing them and it keeps your hat from getting stretched our and bent. Suggestion #2 I always throw my husbands hats in the washer without a frame though and afterward I place the hat on the bottom side of a small kitchen pot. It keeps the hat in good form. Suggestion # 3 I have read that you can wash your hat by placing in on the top rack of your dish washer. It keeps the hat in one spot but the water, soap and water pressure do a good job at cleaning off the grime. I have not ever tried this myself but it may be worth a try. Just remember that no matter how you wash it is never to be dried in the dryer or it may loose it shape, size and color.
Good Luck

Wanting to buy a Power Washer/Electric Edger?

pressure washer 4 gpm on ... pressure washer: Honda Engine Litres Hour Domestic Pressure Washer
pressure washer 4 gpm image

Peter

I'm looking to buy a quality Power Washer and Quality Electric Edger to do a great job, not a sub par one, any suggestions on what to buy/where to look?

Answer
That depends on what kind of work you want to do. For instance:

For residential purposes, you will probably want something around 3200 PSI at 3 GPM, but for commercial properties, you will want something like 4000 PSI at 4 GPM.

If you plan on using it less than 20 hours a week, then save some money and get a direct drive model, but if you will be using it professionally, get a belt drive model. The pump won't have to work as hard and it will last longer.

If you are planning on doing something like driveways, i would get at least a 3200 PSI at 3 GPM model, and more if you can afford it. The reason is that if you do flat surfaces often, you will end up wanting to use an accessory called a surface cleaner to speed up your times. you have to make sure your machine is powerfull enough to run one, however. There are many good brands out there, Pressure-Pro, Hydrotek, MiTM, BE, Sioux... just do some homework online.

Which power washer is better?

nala

I'm getting a power washer for my brother as a honey do gift. It's for him to wash vehicles, 4wheelers and the house. Would like to stay below $300, I found these two that i'm interested in. Has anyone had any problems with these models or have any other suggestions. Karcher Electric Pressure Washer â 2000 PSI, 1.4 GPM and Stanley 1600 PSI Electric Pressure Washer , 2200 Peak PSI.

Thanks

Answer
I'd go with the Karcher. They've been making pressure washers for sometime and should put out a pretty good product. Keep the receipt and if you don't like it, take it back.

That pressure rating will do fine on vehicles but if he's got a two story house, it seems none of them really have a lot of oomph to reach the eves without getting on a ladder which is a somewhat dangerous trick without some assistance.

And you have to be very careful with the electric ones. They are an electric appliance and water and electricity do not play well together.

ok here is the situation, I have two 3000PSI pressure washer pumps, and a gas engine, If I took both and connected them to the motor, supplied enough water flow and used a coupler to join the output on both, will I get 6000psi of water pressure or will I end up creating back pressure and possibly damaging the pums, or will I get killed in the process.

I hope someone with an engeniering degree reads this, maybe I can get a valid answer. oh and forgive me for my spelling disaster here....he he he

Answer
The gas engine is the central component of the whole mess that produces the power. There is no way you can take a gas engine which is capable of producing 3000 PSI and make it produce 6000 PSI. You need more horsepower.

But donât really know were to get started, I have worked in carpentry, construction and automobile fields if that helps on any thing. Can any one give me an idea?

Answer
It seems to me that you've spent a hell of a lot of money on this stuff. Presumably, it's taken at least a year or 2 to accumulate everything. So my guess is if you haven't had any "revelations" after all this time, your best bet would be to sell it to someone who can put it to good use and invest the money in the stock market. It'll be rebounding any day now and you' could make a fortune without leaving your computer desk.
If you're really determined to be self-employed and don't have a preference for what you do then choose something that requires the most expensive equipment, because you'll have less competition. The less competition you have, the easier it is to demand higher prices for what you do.Good luck.

Answer
witch;s brew~ kidding~
on mine i first used cat litter as you know already. Then I poured a box of Baking Soda first then on top of this/Go-Jo Hand Cleaner,I let it stay on the stain over night.the following morning I poured a sm.bottle of club soda, took out a stiff broom and scrubbed it alittle then hosed it off.A friend who owns a auto parts store told me this is what he uses on his parking lot and home driveway,
With disbelief I tried it though ,You may like the results as I did. you ll be surprised!

Can you pressure wash underneath the hood of a car?

educated1

I looked underneath the hood of my car, and wondered if I could go to the car wash, and wash underneath the hood with a pressure washer? I've seen this done before, but I think there are certain area's you're supposed to watch out for such as the engine or something like that. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Answer
Nothing should happen by pressure washing under your hood. However i wouldn't take the risk. There is a chance you could water log your alternator, short some wires, screw up a starter etc. I would suggest a degreaser instead. I prefer to use Simple Green.

have you ever tried Clean Run Cooling vest?

Money is tight so I want to make sure this isn't a gimick of sorts:
http://www.cleanrun.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=918&ParentCat=152

My dogs are going to be doing agility this summer. Not until around 6pm, so they won't have the hottest part of the day, but it could still be around 80F.

I ordered cooling mats for them and was thinking about the cooling vests too I read from someone else asking on here.

Do these really work or just make a dog hotter to have a coat on? Thank you.

Answer
Yes, the Cooling Coats do work. I know a lot of people that use the Clean Run coats & they like them. Some use them dry, but most use them wet & re-wet them as needed. You can put them on a dry dog or a wet dog too.
I made Cooling Coats for my whole crew patterned after ones I saw & really liked, but were too expensive to buy. Mine are made out of synthetic chamois material. I found the chamois material at Checker Auto & at WalMart (in Auto Supply). I just cut the material with pinking shears, it doesn't ravel & then sewed velcro closures at the chest & under the belly. I put some ribbon trim on & they look great! Not too hard & not too expensive. They are like these coats here.
http://www.mydeboxers.com/Products.html
or
http://www.ring-around-the-collar.com/Co...
I think these ones keep the dogs even cooler than the white mesh kind. I wet them & put them in a ziplock bag & bury them down in my cooler in the ice. Put them on the dogs after they warm up before a run, take them off to run & then put them back on right after. Then I re-wet them as needed with the hose or I dip them into the cold ice water in my cooler. I have put them on my dry dogs & after the dogs are wet down with the hose too. They work well either way! And they wash well in the washer.
Hosing my dogs down, at the very least their belly & inner thighs & chest & pads, really helps to keep the dogs cool. If I know there isn't a hose at a trial site. I take a water sprayer. The garden pressure sprayers (have a pump, used for spraying insecticides) work very well. You can find the 1 gallon ones at the dollar stores in season. Crate fans help immensely too. WalMart has bigger battery powered fans that work well.
Good Luck! And Have Fun!

Answer
Pest control
Diatomite is also used as an insecticide, due to its physico-sorptive properties. The fine powder absorbs lipids from the waxy outer layer of insects' exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate. Arthropods die as a result of the water pressure deficiency, based on Fick's law of diffusion

There are more frequent reports of success in controlling bedbugs by the use of diatomaceous earth as an environment friendly barrier to which the bedbugs cannot develop a resistance. The diatomaceous earth abrades the waxy cuticle that covers an insect's exosekeleton, causing them to die of dehydration[citation needed]. Bedbugs exposed to diatomaceous earth typically die within two days of contact.

The first bit is from diatomaceous earth, and the second is from Bed Bug both from wikipedia.
It's night here so I'm going to assume just for some where to start it is the same where you are. First strip all linens and bed clothes, and wash and dry, the wash will kill all bugs and drying will kill all eggs, mix some dish soap in a squirt bottle with vegetable oil and fill with water and shake, I'm assuming you can't get to a garden store like Lowe's and even they may not have it in stock yet. I'ts usually used in gardens for insects, but you can read the Bed Bug source below and vacuum the bed then spray the bed with a fine mist, it will kill in any bugs until it drys so get it as damp as you can stand it, because the solution only is a contact spray, when you get to a garden store and get some diatomaceous earth, then you can really get something accomplished, mix the diatomaceous earth in with the spray mix and spray everything pillow and all, keep repeating the processes, but diatomaceous earth needs to be left even where you sleep, It is so safe they feed it to lifestock for their well being, and has been used in Humans as a dewormer, all forulations sold in the USA have the level of silica so low as not to be of any danger to human health. Keep a bit of humor to keep you brave with diatomaceous earth you have diatomaceous earth which like the energizer bunny just keeps on killing. If you could eventually get some of the encasements for your mattress and pillows which are air tight they eventually build the level of co2 to levels that will kill even the eggs. Although I mostly would just persist with the diatomaceous earth, and cleaning with the washer and dryer. Good Luck it's hard for professionals, BedBugs were thought to have been eradicated, with DDT, now they just ignore the stuff and almost any another poisons.

Famous cel

tools that I would likely use. brad, finish, framing nailer. pressure washer, paint spray gun, dusting. inflating tires.

do i need to buy an air compressor more than 100psi? or is 115 recommended.

Answer
The problem is volume of air. A compressor that is 150psi and a 5 gallon resovour has 7.5 gallons of useable psi at 100psi. Get the math? If your using a framing nailer is using .1cuft per shot at 100psi and you have a compressor with 5 gallons at 100psi your going to be turning on your compressor pump every 10th shot. those factors get worse the more use you have. An air rachet uses a lot more volume, a paint sprayer even more. If you use a air sander you use a lot too.

What do I need to convert a regular air compressor (for power tools) to a power washer?

Super Dude

They seem similar but different. Normally you buy either an air compressor or a power (water) washer. I want to buy an air compressor, just wondering if it can be easily converted into a power washer.

Answer
A powerwasher does not use air assit to begin with..it is all hydraulic pressure from the hydraulic pump on it...About all you can use on a compressor to make a power washer will be the tires and the frame to mount the motor/pumps etcetera on.. Pressure washer needs no air tank

I'm going to pressure wash my house before painting it. Someone told me not to run bleach through my pressure washer. I'm thinking of using a deck sprayer to spray on the bleach/water mixture to clean the exterior of the house if it's not a good idea to run the bleach through the pressure washer. What say you?

Answer
I am a 37 year experienced painter and pressure wash every exterior I do.. I also repair airless sprayers, pressure washers, compressors etcetera...A pressure washer has a solvent tube on it for mixing/applying your cleaning agents or they simply have the black tip to attach that is a solvent tip..or the cheaper ones have a twisting adjusting nozzle on them that when in the fullest open mode applies the solvents...I have ALWAYS used bleach in my pressure washers for over 25 years and it does no harm at all..if the washer has the soolvent tube on it simply put it in the bottle of bleach and when you attach the black tip on the wand it will dispense it accordingly...when you change the tip after bleaching to a washing tip..it will stop dispensing it..I actually use the 12%m chlorine I buy from a swimming pool place in mine and not the 5% in common stores...This is over twice the strength of common bleach, and it has not harmed a pressure washer as of yet...The important part is flushing the washer out and dispensing tube of the bleach after using..IT WILL NOT HARM THE PRESSURE WASHER...

What size pressure washer is good for cleaning a deck?

BigRed

Hi i am looking at buying a pressure washer to clean my deck and to clean my house i found a 2600psi for $299 and a 3000psi for $399 both have a Honda motor. I was planing on using it to clean a couple other houses and decks is it better to get the bigger one or should i stick with the 2600psi?

Answer
The cleaning power is roughly proportional to the PSI rating multiplied by the GPM. While the higher pressure might not be necessary for the tasks you are considering, the added cleaning power means you'll get the job done faster with the more expensive unit. Keep in mind that you can always add distance to reduce pressure (back away from the surface), but you can't add pressure that the unit doesn't produce.

I have tried to use an old 1500 psi unit that I already had to clean a concrete driveway, but just purchased the 3000 psi machine from a home store, and the difference is amazing. My evaluation was that the extra $100 above the 2600 psi unit was well worth the hours saved. And the Honda engine gets very good reviews from most of what I've read.

I would suggest also getting the surface cleaning attachment, particularly for your wood deck. It's not really powerful enough for a really dirty concrete drive, but would surmise that it is sufficient for the wood (you don't want that high of pressure for the wood). For cleaning concrete surfaces, I highly recommend the Turbo nozzle; it takes the 0 deg pattern and spins it in a 15-25 deg (or so) pattern so that you get the dislodging pressure of the 0 degree, but in a pattern size that allows efficient cleaning.

My car has a special paint, and cannot run through a car wash. I think I can use the self-service, but if there is a different solution, I would like to go that route instead.

Any advice?

I'm looking for a good quality pressure washer for cleaning cars. It needs to be able to draw from a water tank without assistance, and it needs to be reliable. About $200 is my budget, but I'd like to keep it as cheap as possible while still keeping quality.

Answer
For $200 you are not going to get any kind of quality pressure washer.
You need a washer which operates at 1800 PSI or higher pressure output to perform effectively. They start at around $350 - $400 dollars. I do not know of any commercially available pressure washers which will draw from an unpressurized tank - they all are designed to operate from a pressurized hose delivering 3-5 GPM @ 20+ PSI.

All I did was to Google the vehicle to find this information. You were not screwed and the estimated MPG is posted online for anyone to find it. Your words, "nice and fast." When you drive "nice and fast" then not matter what the estimated MPG is indicated online, on the sticker, etc. goes out the door. I know how to drive a Prius to get 19 MPG. I also know how to drive a Prius to exceed the posted MPG. I have a 2008 Mercury Mariner hybrid and the estimated MPG is about 30 MPG. Last night on a 10 mile run, I recorded 38.2 MPG. What you are experiencing is called Buyer's Remorse. It is a classic human characteristic. If you went into this dealership unarmed, uninformed and with googly eyes towards a luxury brand vehicle, an Audi, then you, as the person in control of your destiny, made a decision and signed a sales contract. A contract is final when signatures are placed on the paper. Very sorry that you feel this way but a 2010 Prius is THE MPG champ on the market and obviously you were bored with the slow go performance and wanted more Umph! in your driving time. So, you got the Umph! and now you need to learn how to operate this car efficiently. But it is not a Prius. Nothing is. These are hard lessons to accept but what is done is done. There is absolutely nothing you can do but relax and get to appreciate the car in your garage or parking spot. Remember, anytime you go against a professional without proper defensive shields operating, you shall lose the match. So, have the Audi checked out at a mechanic since apparently you did not do that before the sale. This car is in the 70,000 mile range and maybe in need of a schedule service. This is a nice car and it is quite a step up in quality, performance and status from the Prius. I have owned a 2001 Audi TT Roadster since 2002. It took me three years to find it. I still have and it is a great source of fun and driving enjoyment. I use the ECON mode of the AC to save about two to three MPGs. I drive steady at 60 MPH on cruise to minimize fuel usage. I park quickly and away from other cars and I have zero dings on the car. I look ahead to coast to a stop and unless I have it at the MId-Ohio track taking lessons it is driven in moderation. I get comments all of the time. In fact, your A3, with 200 HP and 207 ft-lb. of torque can beat my car with 180 Hp and sub 200 ft-lbs. of torque. Oh, rather than premium fuel, I have used regular for over 10 years without any ill effects. I use synthetic blend engine oil and I have it serviced every six months. It is all original except for an alternator and one coil. Of course, shocks and struts are changed at 50,000 to 70,000 miles. And everything works except for the worthless headlight washer system. I took that out as the left side kept breaking for a reason Audi mechanics could not, or would not, locate. Best of luck.

Does any one know of a website that will tell me what my tools are worth? I am ......?

Answer
Check the Coolant, motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and window washer fluid. Check the tire pressure - including the spare. Look at the belts and hoses.

Here's some things to take with you on your trip:
A cellular phone
Engine coolant
Sunglasses
A flashlight and extra batteries
Some blankets
Non-perishable food items like high-energy protein bars or trail mixes with nuts and raisins
Bottled water
A first aid kit

can you change a pressure washer into a sewer jetta?

LARRY

Answer
Yes, just install the kits to convert them into sewer jetter.Set up your pressure washer outside to get started. Attach your pressure washer hose to your pressure washer and run this hose to the inside or outside drain you want to clean. Remove your gun/wand and attach the provided ball valve, jumper hose and hose reel. Install the provided jetter hose onto the hose reel and attach the desired nozzle for the job at hand.

pump on pressure washer seizes up?

pressure washer maintenance on Pressure Washer Pump Repair | Pressure Washer Suppliers

Cheryl

I run the water through the pressure washer.
I fire up the pressure washer.
I pull the trigger and the pressure washer dies.
I cannot pull the cord again until I release the water pressure in the pump, and no water flows through the hose after the engine dies.
I drained the fuel and restarted. I tried to pull the trigger and gave it a little bump--on and off. The motor stayed running, but the water quit flowing. Is there some sort of a valve in the pump that I need to do something to?

Answer
How long has it been since you ran the thing? If you have bad gas or a clogged fuel line, the unit will start and even run after a fashion. But the moment you load the engine (engage the pump), it will die. Before you look to anything else, drain out the old gas, clear the fuel line, check the carburetor and make sure everything is clean - then add fresh *stabilized* gas and try again. This is such a common problem with small engines - mowers and washers in the spring, and snow and leaf blowers in the fall and winter that have not been stored properly that I expect many dozens of such questions over the next few weeks.

If this doesn't work, then look into the pump itself - but as it is building pressure, I am inclined to think that the engine is running lean or fouled and so cannot take the load.

Simply putting in fresh fuel may not be enough if the carburetor is fouled or the fuel-line partially blocked. You could run some carburetor cleaner through the system and there are fuel-additives that perform the same function - but the former requires some small-engine skills, the latter a lot of time - you may have to run several tanks through the system to clean the jets properly.

But, also read the directions that came with it for pump maintenance and sequence-of-operations. It may be as simple as an adjustment of the pressure switch.

How do you wash your car engine?

Matt

I'm curious to how you guys wash your vehicles engine? I just open the hood and go at it with a pressure washer, if you have a more efficient way please share it with me. Thanks.

Answer
i will give you some tips on how to clean your engine, the cleanness and safer way to do it.
1. cover the parts that are not to be wet, such as spark plugs, alternator, starter and fuses. You can use cloth first then cover it with plastic to make it sure.
2. clean it with kerosine first, you might use a paint brush to clean inner parts of the engine. You can use in engine degreaser if you want instead of kerosine to remove oil and dirt in your engine.
3. Then spray it off with high pressure water to remove the dirt. You can use detergent soap to clean it more especially the part that kerosine and degreaser does not remove.
4. you can dry it with cloth and spray with high pressure air to remove and dry excess water.
5. You can use wax under the hood and armorall to all black part of your engine.
cleaning your engine is one way of maintenance, you can do this as often as you want or feels like doing it. I suggest you can regularly clean your engine as often as you clean the exterior of your car. Hope this help!
