How to Use a Pressure Washer ?

rabbi

Answer
First, hook the hose to the pressure washer. Hook the pressure washer to the facet. Turn on the facet. Pull start the pressure washer. This should work like a mower 2 cycle engine.
Use the gun part and pull the trigger. Hold the end of the gun about 2 inches away from and HARD surfaces, like brick or concrete. Increase the distance with the fragility of the surface, glass for example needs to be at least 2 feet.
It is better to brush in some cleaning solvent before using high pressure water.

I live in a small block of flats and was thinking of getting one to clean the landing and stairs, what i was wondering was if i connect it to the water tap out the back garden can i connect a hose to that so that the washer reaches up the stairs? I have never used one before so im not sure if you can only connect the washer direct to the tap.

Answer
you always use a hose with a pressure washer and you can rent one with a good PSI rating 2500 to 3000 that will really clean your landing or buy one at home depot I just bought one that is 2600 PSI with a honda moter for 299$ it has a 25 foot hose to the gun and I use a 100 ft garden hose and I can reach anything

Recent low water pressure in house/yard-frequent sediment in washer hose filter-no pressure for yard sprinkler

DJ

First the water to fill the washer started running very slowly, then the garden sprinkler stopped working because the pressure is so low. This is all in the last few days. We cleaned the screen on the washer hose yesterday and today it is clogged again. The water heater is over 10 years old but this problem is so sudden. Also, we have a very tight budget and can't afford a new water heater, so if it might be anything else, we want to try any possibilities. All water valves are open. We can't see or hear water running or leaking anywhere. It's going to be 98 degrees this week and my garden is in danger of frying! Any help would be very much appreciated, Thanks!

Answer
If you're on a well:

Any recent heavy rains will stir up sediment and suck it into the waterlines, clogging the filters.

It could also be you have a waterlogged pressure tank, in which case you might be able to empty it out and recharge it (about 40psi) should do.

Not likely but possible, you might have problems with your pump, but, generally if you're getting water then you should be okay... However, you pump may have slipped or the side of your well caved in and that's allowing the sediment to be sucked through, that is if you haven't had any recent heavy rains.

Not sure why you mentioned the water heater as it eally has nothing to do with your problem (but your whole message is sorta cryptic, and reminds me of a plumbing test), but, if you drain it, it should get most of the sediment out, if not on the first try, repeat.

To fix the washing machine check unscrew the lines in the back of the machine (with the water off), and see if the filters on the intake are clogged. Do the same with the all the aerators.

Hope that helps.

How to convert pressure washer into water pump?

jjsschultz

I have a briggs 6.5 hp pressure washer that I was wondering if I could convert it into a water pump to shiphon water from a river. I got the go ahead from the mayor to use river water to water grass and garden but now I need a pump to get it a few hundred feet from the river to my garden. Is there a way to convert my pressure washer into a pump the can siphon the water out for me and pump it to where I need. I'm not worried about it being high or low pressure, just want to know if i can do this.
I tried to do what shiggity said but the pressure washer requires pressurized water going into the inlet it does not siphon from the inlet on its own, i also tried to "prime" it by filling the hose with water before sumerging it into the river but still no luck.

Answer
Attach a pipe to the outlet of your pressure washer.
Add a hose to the end of the pipe.
The pipe is so that your hose won't get damaged by the pressure as it exits the nozzle.
Run a hose from the river to the water supply of your washer. Don't forget a filter.

What's the best electric pressure washer for my money?

auntgnu62

I'm looking in the $100 to $175 range. I've seen the reviews for Campbell-Hausfield,the $99 model is better than it's next one up.Husky 1800 is best rating so far all around at $170. Karcher wasn't getting any good reviews.I don't know much about Simoniz ones.I'm cleaning aluminum awnings to repaint;I need to clean my driveway and the house of Arkansas dust.It gets caked on everything!

Answer
There is not a single brick manufacturer nor any concrete engineer that will ever recommend using a power washer. And on wood surfaces those things are pure murder. Even on aluminum siding or awnings, those things are not good whatsoever.

What that does is destroys the surfaces of brick and concrete and it is subject to moisture penetration and loses its barrier against further dirt repulsion. It actually pitts the surface of most materials including your painted wood and leaves it in a sorry state.

Your best washer is a regular pump and a brush or broom where you can use a strong detergent solution. Liquid deterget is best as it disolves in cold water and an ordinary booster pump on a water supply along with a good long brush to scrub the surface does a good job cleaning without destroying your house.

Those are the facts. Why these machines became so popular in view of the fact that they are so destructive is a question that many manufacturers of brick, concrete, and wood, plastic, and aluminum are asking.

If you have a really dirty awning, or a grease laten concrete driveway, a steam jenny is a tool that works well and does not destroy the surfaces. You can rent one of those at your local rental. The cost of a really high pressure washer driven by a gasoline engine will give you a lifetime of steam jenney rentals and you dont have to store a machine in your garage and worry about a gas engine going bad either.

what is the best psi to effectively remove grime and stains from all surfaces with a pressure washer?

i need to buy a pressure washer to start a small after-school business to earn some extra cash. i will need a gas pressure washer with enough power to clean driveways, walkways, fences, stone, brick, oil stains from garages, ext. what is the minimum PSI i need to be able to do these jobs effectively?

Answer
The more pressure you can get, the better. But also watch water volume too. The cleaning power of a pressure washer can be found by multiply pressure (psi) by water volume (GPM). Some manufacturers offer a lot of pressure with very little volume.

That said, 3000 psi is a good all around pressure. You can always lower the pressure by the type of nozzle that you use.

Hope this helps.

why is my water tank not feeding my pressure washer?

Tony

starting a mobile detailing business, and i can 't get any pressure from my tank and pressure washer

Answer
are you sure the line isnt airlocked? also you need to consider the height and water level in the tank as this will affect the gravity feed. Check the diameter of the feed pipe as the washer will need a certain water flow to function properly. Pressure washers DO NOT suck water in, they must be supplied with the correct flow rate, i suggest using a clear hose as a feed pipe as then you can visually check for air leaks and water flow

Where can I buy boat cleaning supplies in bulk?

Questionma

I would like to start a boat cleaning business and would like to buy big 5 gallon or 55 gallon drums of cleaning supplies and waxes and polishes. Is there a website or supplier? Thanks for the help, I am a college student and just wanting to make some extra cash in the summers.

Answer
Cleaning supplies for boats are not really much different from most everything else. Ok! Guys calm down! Yes, there are a ton of "Boat products! Special care should be exercised when it comes to environmental issues. (Green Products). Vinyl plastic, Canvas parts, Fiberglass, some upholstery issues.

But, Soap is Soap.

Other than some "caustic" products I've found you can do about as well at Costco, as from "wholesalers". I even find useful things at the Dollar store.

I once bottled my own brand of Boat wash. I bought drums of a pretty good cleaner, bottled it and labeled it. it retailed for about half the price of Name brand "boat cleaner".

The trick is to "know" what works and what doesn't.

You can buy wax and rubbing compounds, from "Automotive Paint" wholesalers. Like Sherwin-Williams Auto Paint stores. (Different from their regular paint stores.)

But you can also get set up to buy from boat stores, like West Marine or Defenders Boat supply. The more you buy the better the price. However the bulk savings are small in comparison to other businesses. (Read: "are not worth the effort")

I think the biggest thing you need to know about is the use of buffers, pressure washers, etc. Be very mindful of safety. Wear goggles. Rubber gloves, long sleeve shirts etc.

how do build my own pressure washer with gas motor?

thecoorsgo

Answer
The dangers of making your own pressure washer could result in serious injury. You would need to create a sealed compression chamber for your air that would have to create 1400+ PSI and hold 1-5 gallons of air for personal use, and 20-50 gallons of air for commercial use. you would then need a water source, hose or tank. by the time you go through all of this trouble you will have spent more than you would to buy one.

Water hose pressure washer adapter at lowes?

Iron

Does lowes carry the adapter you can put on your garden hose to use it as a pressure washer? Also does this thing work good, anyone used it? Thanks.

Answer
Pressure washers INCREASE the pressure of the water entering the washer by means of a HIGH PRESSURE pump. Nothing that does not reach similar pressures will have the same effect.
(Pressure washers usually operate up to 1500 - 3000 PSI, up to 15 - 30 times Household water pressure.)

There are a few items that use compressed air to additionally pressurize the water, but they require a separate air compressor and a second hose and never reach really high pressure. (These can discharge at up to about 250 PSI, up to about 2 1/2 Times Household water pressure.)
http://www.expeditionexchange.com/staun/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHBAT4G55T0
These are usually only used in industrial applications where compressed air is already available.

I am assuming that this is the sort of item you were looking to find.
http://www.asseenontvvideo.com/511962/Water-Jet-As-Seen-on-TV.html

This type of item DOES NOT increase the pressure coming into the device,
it merely maintains more of that pressure and hence has a somewhat increased force to the stream of water coming out of the tip, by simply reducing the size of the orifice (hole) at the end of the nozzle. (Household water pressure is usually under 100PSI.)

There are quite a number of common nozzles that achieve much the same effect at a much LOWER COST.

The Adjust-a-Power nozzle is a common one widely used by forestry fire fighters, and car washes.
http://www.dixonvalve.com/dpl/dpl_page/2007/239.pdf
http://www.jmesales.com/item/143575/Dixon-Adjust-a-Power-Nozzle.aspx
You may even find this type of nozzle at Lowes, Home Depot or your local hardware store.

An even cheaper unit to try that is sure to be available at Lowes, Home Depot or your local hardware store is a SWEEPER nozzle. Which has a smaller orifice than a regular Garden Hose Nozzle, but larger than the Adjust-a-Power nozzle.
http://www.dixonbrass.com/dpl/dpl_page/2009/029.pdf
http://www.jmesales.com/item/148800/Dixon-Brass-Sweeper-Nozzle.aspx

Keep in mind that when the orifice is smaller LESS water comes out per minute (or per hour) if you are at the same pressure, so with these devices if the water is doing the real washing it may take significantly longer to achieve the effect you want as well.

Hot Water Pressure?

~*LadyL*~

I've got a problem. I have very low hot water pressure in the shower and for the washer. I checked the valves and they are completely open. My cold water pressure is ok tho. What's going on? Any advice on how I can fix this? I don't know what else to do. Someone please help.
My bathtub is low too. but everything else is ok.

Answer
I assume that your hot water pressure is OK in most places of the house, except for the shower and the washing machine. You say that your cold water pressure is OK, which I interpret as everywhere in the house, including the shower and washing machine. If this is correct, we can rule out the flow restrictor in the shower head. Furthermore, if the valves are completely open, it doesn't leave many possibilities.

It makes me wonder if you have an older home that was plumbed with iron pipe. Iron pipe will rust faster on the hot water line, and these two locations may be the first to go. But if you have rusting here, you had better start budgeting for a copper repipe soon.

On the other hand, if you have copper pipe, it may be that a loose piece of solder in the pipe has worked its way into a constriction, like in the valve mechanism. I know you said the valves are completely open, but there is not much else where debris could become lodged.

You could run a simple test to see how much water is getting to your valve. Turn off your water supply and then remove the hot water valve stem for your shower. Then have someone slowly turn the water back on while you watch the water come out through the opening where the valve stem goes. This may flush out the debris. But if the water trickles out, you'd better check for iron pipe.

Answer
In general consumer grade equipment such as that sold at Home Depot or Walmart will not hold up as long as commercial equipment typically sold at an independent power equipment retailer. I would go to a lawnmower shop that sells commercial equipment and see what they have, the price is quite a bit higher but for regular home use you will almost always never have a problem with the unit for as long as you own it. Brands are pretty much irrelevant anymore in consumer grade because there have been so many company mergers. You can have one company like MTD making over 10 different brands. El cheapo pressure washers typically have Briggs or Tecumseh engines, I've been seeing many now with no-name Chinese engines on them, but good units almost always have Honda engines.

1 If I have an apartment sized washing machine and I am moving to a townhouse with a washer hookup can

janie

I use the single hose that fills it by buying a y hose and hooking it to the single hose so I can put one end in hot and one in cold.

2. Do I need any washers or does that come with the y hose. am they all on size fits all

3. Also do I need to so anything special to the drain hose.

4 How about dryer hose..are the the same size too

thanks for answering these 4 related questions

there is only one hose coming from the washer and there are two faucets

Answer
For any washer you only need a few items.

Electrical power --- 120 V

Water supply -- the single hose with an end that resembles a garden hose will screw right onto the tap coming from the wall in the townhome.

Water drainage --- you have a really big and tough water hose attached to your washing machine and it will connected to some sort of a a black PVC pipe fitting on the wall near where the washer hook up will be located. The downflow is usually very small opening b/c of the violent jarring caused by the high water pressure so it is usually anchored inside the wall and not readily noticeable.

Level your washing machine with the legs or else your machine will be unbalanced.

Otherwise, you are good to go.

Can i vent my portable A/C unit through my dryer vent?

David B

I live in a loft in SF and can't vent the A/C to the window as i want to use it upstairs where there are no windows. I do have a washer/dryer combo unit upstairs, however. Can i vent my A/C unit thru the dryer vent? Would i just cut into it and combine the two? THANKS SO MUCH!

Answer
Ditto on all the "bad idea" answers above.

Besides the lint buildup/carbon monoxide/having to put a "Y" fitting in place/ etc there is a sizing problem. The pipe coming off the back of most portable air conditioners is 5" diameter and most dryers have a 4" diameter pipe. So not only would you be restricting the outlet simply by using the standard 4" outlet for a dryer but you also want to add it to an existing line that I assume you want to also use.

Also if set up in a window the unit vent has no return air stopping flap on it. A typical dryer vent has one and this will restrict the air flow.
Therefore air would tend to go from the AC to the dryer regardless of the outlet.

So here is what I recently did. I purchased from HD (but look in Lowes or any store that handles ductwork) an external vent that looks like a dryer vent except the diameter is for a 6" pipe. (I don't think a 5" one is common and the 6' one is less restrictive.) Into that I installed a 6" to 5" reducer. I needed to cut a 5"+ dia. hole into a piece of plywood for mounting. This was installed in the wall as a back to the 5" dia. adapter that comes with the AC unit. This adapter has spaces for 4 screws at the corners and is ment to attach to the plate that goes in the window in a normal installation. A 6" hole is cut through the outside wall and the vent is pushed through, screwed in and caulked. On the inside the plywood plate is secured in the wall with the 5" end of the reducer going through it. The adapter is attached and I re sheetrocked the portion of the wall that I cut out to give me better axcess.

There is a 5" dia. cap that comes with the AC unit and this is installed over the 5" adapter end inside for the winter. I also put a screen made of 1/4" hardware cloth on the outside of the vent to keep birds from entering.

The unit is now using this exhaust just fine. This particular unit sends all condensate out of the 5" Vent line. I have another unit that produces liquid condensate and for that I am using a condensate pump and a separate liquid line.

This was done on a standard wood frame construction but could easily be adapted to masonry construction. If you are a bit handy or know someone who is it should not be too difficult to accomplish. It is really no more difficult then putting in a vent for a kitchen hood or a bathroom fan.

Edit: Mr. E inspector would it be a "violation" if it were a kit hood vent or a bathroom vent (probably) or an electric dryer vent? What if it was a duct without a motor (or individual motors like some apartment buildings with common ducts) and therefore not governed by the NEC. Justin is from Ca. I know in NYC they have only partially adopted the NEC. Are you sure it would always be a violation in Justin's neck of the woods?

With defference to Justin's answer above. Most techs will proceed with a solution that falls within the disciplines that they are most familiar with. This is right but it doesn't necessarily make it the best solution. If you choose to install a Y connector you have to make sure you do install the dampers and you can also get 5" to 4" reducers if you find it is necessary.

The pipe sizes will then fit but what I have said about restrictions also applies and you may be asking the original 5" airflow to be reduced to 4" as well as pass by 2 dampers. A ventilation specialist or the manufacturer's tech support could tell you for certain if the restriction (static pressure) would shorten the life of the AC unit or further decrease the efficiency and thus cooling of this relative inefficient type of unit. Regardless of your decision. Stay cool (as possible)

Anyone know about small pressure washers?

Billabong

I've got a fairly new Craftsman pressure washer (Briggs engine). This thing has been giving me trouble lately. Basically, I'm not sure if it's the pump or engine. What it does ... mostly when it's idling and less frequent when spraying I get this "kickback" or "snap" that you can hear and feel in the wand. Almost like the engine is missing or like the pump is failing. Sometimes I have to trigger several times before I get steady pressure. The only thing I've added on it recently was a high pressure side soap injector. It seems like the problem is stemming from the pump but I'm not sure. I don't have a lot of hours on this one at all.

Answer
it almost sounds as if you are sucking air make sure your water connections at the house are tight also when not in use make sure your soap injector valve is off you want too keep that pump from freezing also because those ceramic pistons are expensive they cost me $ 35 a pop I was lucky I only needed 1

excell pressure washer no pressure?

Answer
Try cleaning out the nozzle at the end of the wand. A lot of people think their machine is shot when it is only a piece of sand plugging the nozzle. You may have to poke it out with a small wire, or disassemble the nozzle to get down to the small orifice that is plugged.

Also check to make sure the chemical injector is not open. This would cause you to suck air and get no pressure.

What is the best epoxy or tape to fix leak in pressure washer hose?

paki

Where i work we use power washers to clean, machines are rated at 1500 psi, the problem is that hoses get small ruptures and instead of replacing a $110.00 hose each time i want to repair it so hose can be used again

Answer
You may be able to cut out the small section with the hole and splice the hose back together with a brass coupling piece, or several eauipment rental stores can install a hydraulic fitting for you to repair the hose. You might be approaching the cost of a new hose with the cost required to make any repairs, so you'll have to decide if it's worth the trouble.

Pressure washer hose has hole in it.?

onleeu61

My pressure washer hose has a hole in it and about 2 feet from the connection. I would like to get this repaired if I can. I know that it cannot be patched. Can it be cut of and refitted to the connector, and what kind of business would I take it to for repair. I'm one of those people who would rather repair, if possible, rather than replace. Thanks

Answer
Lines for pressure washers normally consist of 3 or more layers - at a minimum - inner hose/line, metallic or nylon wrap, outer cover.
A seemingly small leak on the outside means that the metallic or nylon wrap has been compromised. Putting a "patch" of any kind on the outside might hold for a short time but the pressurized water will eventually force between the layers and break through again. Short of splicing, which requires special tools, there is no easy way to patch this. Furthermore, since the strongest part of the line has already been compromised, it's likely to degrade further.
Sorry to say, the best remedy is to replace the line.
Good luck.

Kitchen Faucet - Low pressure when turning hot water handle?

Jimmy Z

I have a compression type kitchen faucet with 2 handles.
The right handle (cold) when turned gives normal water pressure.
The left handle (hot) when turned gives low water pressure. It takes 2-3 more rotations on the handle to achieve the same pressure as the cold one.

Is it a build up in the pipes or something in the stem?
what should I be looking for if/and when I remove the stem?

Pressure for both hot and cold are fine in the bathroom shower & sink.

Answer
It sounds as if your washer is getting stuck, it could be as simple as replacing the tap water, as they do break down with age and use. Do you have to over tighten the tap to get it to stop.

From the other information you have provided, it has nothing to do with the actual type of hot water sytem you have but it is an issue just for that tap.

turning off water supply?

Brad G

hi im a little bit impaired when it comes to plumbing- I need a bit of help here- I want to change the washer in a tap- so i turned off the water mains outside- then opened up all the cold taps to drain them- but now boiling hot water is coming out the cold tap??? do I also have to shut off the geyser

Answer
The hot water water is finding a path through a faulty valve (tap) washer to the cold water side. Since you shut off the main water supply, it can only be the pressure from your hot water tank. Open the drain at the bottom of your hot water tank to relieve the pressure from there.

What PRESSURE WASHER should I buy?

Looking to purchase a gas pressure washer. Don't want to spend more than I have to. Traditional residential cleaning, siding kid toys, patio furniture, etc. I was looking at a 2600 but recently heard I need a 3000??? Any thoughts? Any specific models you like?? Thanks!!
it will be used frequently and those crummy 1500's don't do anything for siding. i know i need gas i'm just not sure if the 2600 is enough or if i should go for the 3000

Answer
A 2600psi or a 3000psi gas pressure washer can do some pretty serious damages but it doesn't mean you couldn't use those units for your applications. Many gas powered pressure washers will allow you to adjust the power level. You could use those pressure washers to wash your car and windows or strip paint off your old wooden fence. High power pressure washers will be A LOT more versatile than those underpowered 1500psi or 1800psi ones.

Honda is famous for their small gasoline engines. Like their cars and lawnmowers, their gas pressure washers also live up to this reputation. They are easy to start. They are easy on gas. And they will last for who knows how long with just regular maintenance. A 2600psi pressure washer is capable of making dents (with the "right" nozzle) on your stucco (or even your drive way) already and it will be good enough for residential cleaning. But since power levels could be adjusted, it won't hurt if you get yourself a bigger unit (if you think extra power is worth the cost). Our local Costco stores sells Honda pressure washers for under $500. Maybe you should check yours too. :)

PS: Be careful with those pressure washers. Always check the power setting before each use. I used the washer to wash my lawn chairs once. I didn't know the washer was set on full power and the jet stream cut the fabric on one of the chairs right open. There's another time when I used pressure washer to wash my motorcycle. Once again, I forgot to check the power setting and the first blast cut the saddle (seat) right open. After that incident, I ALWAY check the settings. LOL

PPS: Don't be tempted to test how powerful the jet stream is with your hand. Many high pressure washers are very capable of giving you very nasty cuts.

Answer
No, electric is not the way to go. If you plan to start a business you muct invest in a gas washer. Try Sam's Club or Costco thay have great deals. Electric do not have enough psi to do all the jobs you will run across.

can i wash an engine with degreaser by hand?

B Caz

I want to wash my car's engine. The nearest pressure washer place is closed. I live too far out in the country. Can i wash it using degreaser and a bucket and cloth?

Answer
Make sure the engine is cold... Spray degreaser on the engine... Let it set for awhile, wash it of with a garden hose... Your good to go after you sop up the water off the engine...

External car engine clean up?

Mario B

I own a 2004 Ford Taurus SES and I am slowly restoring the car to top condition. One of things that I want to do is to clean the engine (not internally) but the externally, so that not just the car looks great but the engine to look like it came from the factory. I live in Saint Peters burg FL and would like to know if anyone specializes in this. If so how much would it cost to do this. Any info would be great.

Thank you,

Answer
Degreaser and a pressure washer. Just don't get to close with the pressure washer and let the engine dry completely before starting again.

high pressure washer has very little pressure?

lemondrop

2400 psi....used to have to hold the gun with both hands now I just go along with one hand on the nozzle and it takes FOREVER to clean just the walkway and I have to practically touch the cement to get it really good. There is a white, green, red, and yellow attachment. The red works really well but is pin point (draw your name type) and would take a REALLY REALLY long time to do anything. Any suggestions. I'm obviously not very technical so I would appreciate detailed information please and Thank YOu Very Much!!!! Engine runs fine just little pressure.
It's gas powered if that makes a difference lol

Answer
This could be several things....possibly the seals, or you may need to check the pump oil. Go to Sears, they sell pump oil, as well as several products designed to lubricate the pump and clean it as well. The attachments you describe are the different nozzle tips for various spray patterns. Do you run any chemicals through the unit?? If so - make sure that they are approved for this type of use, and NEVER run bleach through the unit (unless you thoroughly flush it out afterwards). You might also want to carefully dis-assemble the wand and make sure that there are no mineral deposits blocking anything. Check the water inlet screen (where you attach the hose, there should be a screen) make sure it's not clogged or blocked. Finally, consider using a chemical to "help" the pressure washer do it's job....for concrete, Home Depot carries gallon sizes of "Rust Aid" - use a pump-up garden sprayer, apply the Rust-Aid, let it "work" for 5 or 10 minutes then blast it off with the pressure washer.

Best chemical solution to use with a pressure washer?

WenchOtheW

I will be using a pressure washer for the first time to clean concrete sidewalks and building exteriors for a large condo association. What cleaning solution should I use? Keep in mind I am trying to be cost efficient as well and I will most likely require several gallons. Thanks.

Answer
I just use bleach. It's diluted so much you can't smell it and it seems to work fine on the mold and dirt that accumulates in Florida. You have to soak the building or sidewalk first, then go back over it with high pressure. There's also Rust Out, or mix a solution of Iron Out. But bleach is the cheapest and usually the high pressure will be enough to clean whatever needs to be cleaned and you also want to be environmentally friendly.
