I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer, and I really want to take it to a car wash and use the pressure washer to clean out my engine bay. Other than not spraying the filter, is there any reason NOT to do it? I've heard some people say their car wouldn't start afterwards, some people say its okay but to leave the car running... Which one is it?! Any help would be awesome.

Answer
Usually yes. Although when you use the pressure washer you should avoid or at least be light on the electrical connections. The connections are sealed however there is always the chance that a seal could be bad or not tight. It's also not a bad idea to avoid the altenator. Other than that there is absolutely no problems with washing your engine and bay with a pressure washer. As far as leaving the engine running it shouldnt matter and could actually be worse since it keeps your headers hotter. This could potentially but unlikely cause your headers to crack.

Should I wash my rug at the car wash?

PlasticTre

I got the idea from my friend. He said that's how he cleaned his mom's rugs.

One of my dogs has white hair and sheds a LOT. There are white hairs embedded in the rug that I can't get out with the vacuum or carpet cleaner.

If I use the pressure washer at the car wash.. will there be any drawbacks? Can it damage the rug? *It's a huge cheap rug anyway from walmart*

Answer
Sounds like a good idea but the only thing is it's going to be sopping wet, how are you ever going to get it dry. If you have a truck you could put it in the back of it once clean then take it home and hang it over a fence or something. Good luck!:)

I would just shampoo it with a shampooer.

I'm 20 years old live in Los angeles I have a truck & some experience in detailing/washing & some clients!

What are the basics things too buy just too start ? Any heads up ?

I was thinking pressure washer vacumme Busines cards flyate generator & washing utensils & water tank?

I have $500-700 budget!

Answer
You just about got the list right, this actually was the very first business I did. You can get lots of the stuff at Pawn Shops or on Craigslist used for a good price. I would say a good vacuum first, washing utensils and then a pressure washer generator, try and get a quite running one.

What I did was start in the residential areas, in that way I could use the clients power and water. As my funds and clients built up I got into washing at commercial spaces where you would need to have your own everything. The key to this business is trust, people have to be able to trust you with their vehicle and it's contents. So make sure you look presentably, get maybe one or two shirts with your name and some simple logo so you look legit and just market like crazy and do a good job. Always ask for referrals, and give out tons of business cards in the areas you serve.

You can also rent equipment you don't have for now as well, so book several shampoo's in one day and rent the machine from HomeDepot for the day, same with the generator and pressure washer. Also put a nice heavy orbiter and buffer on the list as well. Look to buy your stuff also wholesale if you can as this will save you some money and you get commercial grade stuff which typically perform better.

Hope this helps if I can be of additional assistance please let me know.

What is the best way to manually clean my house's siding and brick?

david d

I do not have a pressure washer.

Answer
If your trying to do it yourself and save money, there are places that rent those power washers, we used to have one and it cleaned everything from the masonry to zapping the grime from the concrete of the driveway. I've seen a few people use something like those "brooms" that soap up, similar to the ones at those car washes. They hook up to the garden hose, and I think a lot depends on the solution you use, and what you're trying to clean.

I have a big pressure washer and would like to make an axle and get wheels on it. There are holes in the frame where a kit comes from the manufacter, but it has been a pain to try and order the kit. So I would like to know what i need to make the axle and wheels on it?

Answer
You don't need an axle. Just bolt on each wheel using a "shoulder bolt" to the exisiting holes in the frame. Think about how a lawnmower has the wheels bolted on. Keep it simple and don't try to over engineer the project.

I took apart my pressure washer pump and gear oil has spilled all over. How do I reassemble?

X-Men

I took apart my Karcher K2400HH pressure washer pump unit from the engine and now gear oil is all over on the ground. I think I took the whole pump unit out and now I need to reassemble it back again. How do I put it back together, where do I fill the oil back in and what type of gear oil should I use? Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
I had the same problem with a Generac Model No 1537 2400PSI washer.!!! This unit has a 5.5 HP Honda engine.
I'm a builder, and one of my customers gave me this pressure washer after he had problems with it. Seems he left it with the gas in it for years and gummed up the carb. He told me his daughter ran it without the water turned on and burned up the pressure pump. He bought a new pump, but had no idea how to replace it. When I removed the old pump, I had a flood of oil on the garage floor. The new pump was a Briggs and Stratton kit #193473GS, and did not have the wet bearings of the original. It bolted right up to the bottom of the engine and works like a charm.. It took a little cleaning with Gum-out to get the engine running, but now it works fine.
I remember that there was a drain plug on the side of the pump shaft housing, but nowhere in the service manual did it tell you what weight oil went in there ,or how much.

But donât really know were to get started, I have worked in carpentry, construction and automobile fields if that helps on any thing. Can any one give me an idea?

Answer
It seems to me that you've spent a hell of a lot of money on this stuff. Presumably, it's taken at least a year or 2 to accumulate everything. So my guess is if you haven't had any "revelations" after all this time, your best bet would be to sell it to someone who can put it to good use and invest the money in the stock market. It'll be rebounding any day now and you' could make a fortune without leaving your computer desk.
If you're really determined to be self-employed and don't have a preference for what you do then choose something that requires the most expensive equipment, because you'll have less competition. The less competition you have, the easier it is to demand higher prices for what you do.Good luck.

Troy-bilt pressure washer repair question?

Brad25

The washer will not run when the water is hook up. If i disconnect the water than it will startup just fine. You can feel the binding when the water is on and hooked up when you pull start it. So given that the pump is bad. What is bad on the pump? Is the repair kits a good idea or just buying the new universals pump for 100 bucks? Any advice or experience would be appreicated.

Answer
when the water is connected to the washer try pulling the trigger on the gun without the washer turned on if water comes out keep the trigger held for a few moments to prime the washer then try turning it back on. if no water comes out of it at all even when turned off then it sounds like there is a blockage some where check if there are any filters in the pressure washer they are usually behind where u plug the hose pipe into. try screwing it off and giving it a rinse.

Also pressure washers should never be used without water connected to them as this can damage the compressor pump very easily

what furnace air filter should i buy?

pressure washer amazon on pictures of Northern Tool Power Washer
pressure washer amazon image

Madzia M

I have just run out of my air filters for my furnace. All I know is that it uses 16x25x1 and that we have dog. I checked Ace Hardware and Home Depot and there are so many types that I just don't know what to get. I was thinking of some deal at Amazon or Ebay but still don't know what to get. Please help.

Answer
Standard, pleated filters that do not have a higher MERV rating than 8 are what I recommend to my customers, and what I use in my own system. They aren't expensive, and they are what the manufacturers of your furnace had in mind when they designed the equipment.

Filters that are 1 inch thick that are marketed as "3 month filters" or "hypoallergenic filters" should never be used, especially if your furnace serves an air conditioner. These filters have a much higher MERV rating, which means, from the start, they reduce more air flow than a lower MERV rated filter.

Washable filters are even worse. You can never wash all of the crap that is in one of those out, even with a pressure washer. So every time you clean it, its MERV rating is going up and less air is going through. Eventually, it will lower the airflow to problematic levels.

If you are hypoallergenic, then there are much more effective ways of taking allergens out of the air, like electrostatic air cleaners and UV light systems.

The problem with the higher MERV rated filters is that the reduced air flow is harmful to your systems operation and overall well being. A heater requires a certain CFM of airflow to maintain the right amount of heat transfer in the heat exchanger. Too much airflow and the temperature of the heated air will be too low. Too little airflow and the temperature of the heat exhanger and surrounding furnace chassis gets too high. This can be a very serious fire hazard. To keep your heater from burning down your house in this situation, there are safety components in your furnace. One of these is called a high limit switch. It's a very simple switch that opens at a specific temperature. If this happens, the burners will shut off.

I go on service calls quite often where someone is complaining of no heat and the only problem is their filter is dirty and the furnace got too hot. Higher MERV rated filters make a system much more prone to this type of failure. Plus, they are usually fairly expensive, sometimes as much as three times as much as what I recommend to my customers.

Also, if you have an air conditioner and not just a furnace, in the summer when you're running the AC, if you lower the airflow too much, your evaporator coil will freeze up from not enough heat being delivered to the coil. This means the AC will not work. Repeated freeze ups can destroy your AC's compressor, which is a very, very expensive fix.

The filters you should look for are should have a material that looks like cotton paper and are pleated, with wire mesh on at least one side to prevent the material from pulling through. If you are shopping at home depot or the like, I think they stock 3M filters that are pretty good.

One thing I would recommend, just have a service check up of your furnace (and AC if you have it) and tell them you'd like to buy a box of filters before they come out. They should just bring the box out when they come for the service call. I do this all the time for my customers, and it saves them money as buying 12 at a time, even with the contractors mark up, is cheaper than buying one at a time from Home Depot. Plus they get delivered to you, and your furnace gets a check up all in one visit. Just a thought.

What garden hose for a high pressure nozzle?

Steven

I plan to buy a high pressure 250psi spray nozzle which I will put a link in the end. But I want to know if I bought only a 5/8 inch hose, will that limit the water pressure. I just went to the store and saw that 5/8 inch hose is actually quite thin haha. Should I cancel my order and buy a bigger 3/4 inch hose or is the 5/8 inch just fine? Thans

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015AUOSC?ie=UTF8&force-full-site=1&ref_=aw_bottom_links

Answer
Most household water pressure falls between 60 -80 PSi, with some getting as high as 100 PSI.
Unless you have an unusually high pressure pump or supply source, virtually all common GHT nozzles will handle your service.

Garden Hose is usually rated for between 150 PSI and 250 PSI Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP).

There are commercial hose products that utilize long shank commercial GHT (Garden Hose Thread) couplings that might be able to exceed 250 PSI MAWP, but would not be likely to be found in your situation.

There are special nozzles, used in the Fire Equipment Industry, that are capable of handling higher pressures, but these are so expensive as to be absurd for your use.

You cannot get more pressure out of the system than goes into it.
When you restrict the flow at the nozzle outlet, by using a smaller orifice (outlet hole) you minimize the pressure drop that occurs and you will have the effect of more force, but at the expense of REDUCED FLOW.

Dixon Valve's "Adjust-a-Power" Nozzle is used by forest firefighters to achieve better reach and minimize water usage. It is also widely used as a "sweeper" nozzle for removing debris.

http://www.dixonvalve.com/search/?searchâ¦

Short of getting a real pressure washer, or getting a special nozzle that requires an air compressor to boost the pressure from you hose, this is the best thing for "hitting" power, but it will not let you put out the volume of water a regular Garden hose nozzle will.

Nelson is a fine company, however realize that the "300% more water flow than a standard nozzle" is ONLY possible when you have the 250 PSI pressure at the nozzle inlet. The increase is mostly due to the higher flow rate at 250 PSI vs 100 PSI.

Putting a high volume nozzle on a smaller diameter hose will somewhat starve the nozzle, resulting in a reduced outlet pressure, and "hitting" power of the stream.

If a high flow rate is your requirement then you should go with the 3/4" Hose.

If you opt for a lower volume nozzle then the 5/8" hose might suffice.

Make sure which ever hose you get is rated for the applications working pressure.

I have to go cheap on this so it looks like i'm going to be getting an a electric one. I saw a Black and Decker one that said 1600psi but a review said it normally is about 1250psi and not too good at removing paint. I have seen several Karthers at advertised 1400psi without that review. I also saw a 1500psi but forgot the brand name of it.

Answer
2500 PSI should do it, be extreamly careful not to gouge or cut the wood with the spray. Also you will need to let the wood dry for at least a week , of hot dry weather, so the paint will not peel off later. Do not be disapionted if you can't remove all of the paint, you will need to scrape and sand prior to priming. Good Luck!

Anthony Ko

I'm 16 years old and I want to start my own washing/detailing service. I am going to be legit and buy from top notch companies and always do my best. I was wondering if this is a smart investment for my age. I'm going to spend about $600 of my own money in this business. How can I start the business and expand it? What should I start out with and what should my prices be? My family has owned multiple full service car washes and one day I will take over but why not start now? Any advice is helpful thank you! Also what pressure washers would you recommend

Answer
1. Do your Homework before you invest.
I suggest you rent a pressure washer for the weekend or if you already have one or can borrow one, pressure wash your own house. Keep in mind it will be harder for you at this stage because you will not have all the right tools and the experience. (IT GETS EASIER)

2. I suggest starting the business on the side (Don't Quit your Day Job). A lot of the work can be scheduled around your schedule on Nights and Weekends.

3. Create a catch name that reflects what you do.
examples.
Mikes Pressure Washing
Water Blasting of Crystal Beach
Ship Shape Pressure Washing (*Specialize in cleaning Hulls of Boats)
you get the idea.

This is going to be important when it comes to advertising especially online advertising for SEO purposes.

4. Now that you have a Name. Let's get set up with the basic equipment to get STARTED (*This is just a list of things to get you goin')

Purchase or Acquire the following items.
* 20" Flat Surface Cleaner - $400 or more
* Turbo Nozzle - $60
* X-Jet - $130
* 24' Extension wand - $150
* 100' of 3/4" quality water hose - $50
* Get a Website or Landing Page - I can set you up on www.pressurewashingpowerwashing.org/yourname.html for a $25 setup fee and provide content for a 1 page landing page.
* Get a list of Equipment rental companies to rent equipment
(I suggest rent equipment for the first 5 jobs so the business can pay for its own equipment) Home depot rents pressure washers for about $60 per day you may also try other rental companies also.

5. MARKETING

Let's get this party started.
* Have web page created ** MUST **
* Open Google Adwords Account Deposit $100 into this account ** MUST **
* Open CraigsList Account ** MUST **
* Business Phone # ** MUST **
* Business Cards - This can actually wait if you want to
* Go to Office Depot and get a simple sale receipt book.

6. I am assuming you already have a truck or van or trailer you can tow.
Search eHow for articles on setting up a business
*Checking Accounts / Financial Software
*DBA / Regulations / etc.

I am considering buying a Craftsman pressure washer with 3800 max psi and 4 max gpm. It has a Honda GX engine with the TRIPLEX water pump that has an ADJUSTABLE PRESSURE CONTROL.

I have search far and wide on the internet and have called on numerous pressure washer dealers. NO ONE CAN ANSWER THIS QUESTION.

"SINCE IT IS AN ADJUSTABLE PRESSURE, WHAT IS THE RANGE OF PSI ?"

is a 2000 psi electric pressure washer good enough to clean siding and wood deck?

I am looking at purchasing a 2000 psi electric washer and want to know if that will be good for cleaning my wood deck and aluminum siding on my house? i also would use it for other smaller misc. cleanings.

Answer
the 2000 psi washer may cause a bit of damage if used too close to the wooden deck, but if used wisely and not on a too long deck it will be effective. If you take the nozzle too close you might see splinters especially if the wood is not very well seasoned. For a siding this will only be effective if the siding is small and neither very wide nor very long.
Best to use an adjustable washer where you can adjust the pressure and then buy something in the range of 3500 to 4000 psi maximum power. Depends on your budget!
To have a little extra power will help you use the washer for long time and will somehow minimize the maintenance.
Best of Luck!

Due to an old roomates German Shepard, and his propensity to scratch, urinate and deficate on my deck, I have to pressure wash it before resealing it, and I also need to pressure wash the patio beneath it. This gives me an excuse to buy a pressure washer. I know nothing about these things so... What is the best model under $300 that will take care of buisness?

Answer
Karcher 2400 PSI, Honda gas powered, from Costco, $299. Sorry, it seems that this model is no longer made. A co-worker recommended this model and I've been extremely satisfied. The electric models are not much better than a good high pressure hose nozzle. The closest I can find is Karcher 2500 PSI Pressure Washer w/ Honda Engine $399.99

What PRESSURE WASHER should I buy?

jerseymom

Looking to purchase a gas pressure washer. Don't want to spend more than I have to. Traditional residential cleaning, siding kid toys, patio furniture, etc. I was looking at a 2600 but recently heard I need a 3000??? Any thoughts? Any specific models you like?? Thanks!!
it will be used frequently and those crummy 1500's don't do anything for siding. i know i need gas i'm just not sure if the 2600 is enough or if i should go for the 3000

Answer
A 2600psi or a 3000psi gas pressure washer can do some pretty serious damages but it doesn't mean you couldn't use those units for your applications. Many gas powered pressure washers will allow you to adjust the power level. You could use those pressure washers to wash your car and windows or strip paint off your old wooden fence. High power pressure washers will be A LOT more versatile than those underpowered 1500psi or 1800psi ones.

Honda is famous for their small gasoline engines. Like their cars and lawnmowers, their gas pressure washers also live up to this reputation. They are easy to start. They are easy on gas. And they will last for who knows how long with just regular maintenance. A 2600psi pressure washer is capable of making dents (with the "right" nozzle) on your stucco (or even your drive way) already and it will be good enough for residential cleaning. But since power levels could be adjusted, it won't hurt if you get yourself a bigger unit (if you think extra power is worth the cost). Our local Costco stores sells Honda pressure washers for under $500. Maybe you should check yours too. :)

PS: Be careful with those pressure washers. Always check the power setting before each use. I used the washer to wash my lawn chairs once. I didn't know the washer was set on full power and the jet stream cut the fabric on one of the chairs right open. There's another time when I used pressure washer to wash my motorcycle. Once again, I forgot to check the power setting and the first blast cut the saddle (seat) right open. After that incident, I ALWAY check the settings. LOL

PPS: Don't be tempted to test how powerful the jet stream is with your hand. Many high pressure washers are very capable of giving you very nasty cuts.

can you paint aluminum siding?

Answer
My 2 cents worth...

Old aluminum siding can be painted, rather than replaced. Here is the process.

Clean the aluminum siding. I use Simple Green. Whatever cleaner is used, a good rinsing is important to remove all detergent residue. A pole sander is great for scrubbing. Just attach a green nylon scrubbing pad to the sander and spray on detergent and scrub.
If the siding was painted before with a latex paint and you are repainting, you shouldn't need to primer coat unless the surface is in poor condition or peeling. If you need to primer coat, use a good water based exterior primer. Let your surface be the guide when deciding if you should primer coat. If unsure, then primer coat everything. It can't hurt and will provide a better and longer lasting job.
A light sanding is helpful before applying the final finish coat. Sand with a 150 grit sandpaper. If you are recoating an acylic latex with latex, sanding isn't a big deal since the latex adheres very well to latex.
For the finish coat, acylic latex is the way to go. I use a low luster or satin finish. It looks more like the factory finish. For a real smooth job, use an airless sprayer with a .017 gun tip. You can rent a professional machine in most areas. If you want to brush and roll, use a foam roller which gives a fairly smooth finish. Whatever method is used, add Flood Flowtrol paint conditioner to the paint. It slows the drying and lets the paint flow and level out. If you spray the siding, you can build up the material quickly. If you brush and roll, you will need a couple of coats to get good coverage.

A pressure washer speeds up cleaning. They can be rented in most areas. If you pressure wash, you still may need to scrub some stains out of old paint. If you have chalking paint, a pressure washing is the best method for removal of chalking.
Pittsburgh Paints makes an aluminum siding refinishing material. It is very good, but on the expensive side. It is best if you are spraying the siding with an airless sprayer.

Chalking - Old factory siding finishes often chalk. Remove chalk before painting. Use TSP cleaner for chalking paint. Rinse very well.

Car Pressure Washer Help..?

I am looking to buy a pressure washer for cleanin my car.I am only looking to use it for cleaning my car and nothing else really.I was wondering what would some people recommend? If they have bought a good one and its going strong,etc..

Im in ireland FYI..Not really looking to spend more than â¬120-â¬150 ish but want a good solid pressure washer for that price..Thanks

Answer
most car detailers would say a pressure washer will do more damage to your car paint than good
Perhaps it will be useful on like tires.

If you want to buy something to make your washing easier, you should look at a foam gun/cannon/lance instead.

The hot water faucet to my washing machine is leaking a lot?

When I turn my washing machine on the hot water faucet leaks to the floor. I put plumbers tape and tightened every screw and bolt but to no avail. Here is a link to some pictures. I drew an arrow pointing to where the leak is coming from. Should I replace the whole thing? Any advice would be most appreciated.

Answer
No, you don't need to buy a new faucet. If you understand how the faucet works, then it is fairly easy to repair it.

The faucet handle is attached to a shaft called the "stem." When the faucet is opened [turned on], water wants to also come out around the stem [between it and the large hexagonal "packing nut" which the stem passes through/sticks out of].

To prevent that there is a flexible string-like packing material wrapped around the stem, under the packing nut. When installed, the packing is wound around the stem and is loose and does not want to fit under the packing nut.

The packing is nut is forced down onto and compresses the packing until the threads in the packing nut can be screwed onto the the faucet body below. Then the packing nut is tightened just enough to compress the packing around the stem tight enough to stop the leaking of the water under pressure.

IF too much packing is used, and/or the nut is tightened too much then it is very difficult to turn the handle and stem. So, the trick is to tighten the packing nut just enough to stop the leaking and still be able to turn the handle'stem.

First, I suggest that you try [little by little] tightening the packing nut to see if it will stop the leak. If you screw the packing nut all the way down until it stops, BUT water still leaks around the stem, the that means the packing material is worn out and needs to be replaced. Therefore, replacement of the packing material is the next step.

Take the photo with the red arrow to your local hardware store, and find a knowledgable clerk. Explain your problem while showing the photo. He/she should be able to provide you with a packing material kit, and explain how you can fix this problem yourself.

I cannot tell by looking at your faucet picture how old it is but, some of the newer faucets use a rubber-like washer instead of the string-like packing. With the washer, you'll have to remove the handle to allow removal of the stem from the hole in the packing nut in order to slip the washer down the stem.

With luck, the packing repair kit will have illustrated instructions to help you.

98 Camry leaking oil and my check engine light comes on?

Kenzie072

The oil leak is a problem that no one can find the answer too yet it is all over my driveway(and yes it is oil), and my check engine light comes on for no reason that anyone can find. (They tell me that my gas cap is not tight enough) I have taken it to a few dealerships in my area. Someone, anyone any Ideas???

Answer
Shoot it. Toyotas have no soul. (Just kidding). Has anyone degreased and thoroughly cleaned the underneath and engine to see where the oil is actually coming from? Sounds like you need a good mechanic! (But you already know that). 1. Clean and degrease the engine including underneath. (You can do this yourself with a high pressure washer and degreaser however stay clear of the spark plug leads and other electrics as it may not start when you have finished). 2 Put a large piece of cardboard under the car and wait. 3 check where the oil lands. 4 get under the car (Please use ramps or proper stands, I have witnessed a person get crushed, not pretty). Look up from where the oil is landing. See if you can identify the source. If you can mark it (white paint on a small brush will do). If its simple you may be able to fix it yourself. If not you can go to the mechanic (or 2 or 3) and get an accurate estimate to do the repair. Now that you know the location of the leak you may not know how to fix it but you are less likely to get ripped off. Oil leaks should not be a fact of life on a car as new as 98. Could be anything from a seal to a sump gasket, sump plug O ring (probably copper) oil filter not tight enough or seal leaking, rocker (tappet) cover gasket or any number of other gaskets. Could also be gearbox related or coming from the driveshafts. Did it start slowly? is it getting worse? how long has it been leaking? how much oil are you losing? These are all questions any decent mechanic should ask before he starts charging. For any mechanic to tell you he cant find the leak is crap. He isn't looking hard enough. Go to a decent private mechanic who doesnt mind getting dirty. In regard to the Engine check light it is probably a sensor. You need to plug it in and get an error code.. That should tell you what the alleged cause is. Unfortunately you will probably have to go to a dealer to plug it in unless you know of an independant mechanic with the gear. (Then again if you did we wouldnt be here!) Hope that's some help.
