want to work on cars but know next to nothing about them?

So i've always been interested in working on cars. Autobody mostly. But i know next to nothing about cars that most people wanting to get into this career do. Do autobody schools start you from the basics of a car or do they through you in hoping you know most of the stuff already?

Answer
AutoBody repair is a very easy skill to learn. There are vocational classes at just about every school and some prisons believe it or not.

I suggest you look into getting a Pell Grant and within 6 months to 1 year you can be certified. Or you can simply apply for an entry level position at an auto body shop. It's much easier then you think. Not really physically demanding with all the new air tools today. You don't even have to go to school to learn the trade.

I been doing my own bodywork and paint jobs since I was a teen. You would be amazed at what you can create with simple Rustolium off the shelf from Home Depot.

Take a look at some of my cheap paint jobs for @$40 compleate : paint , brushes, rollers, ect. all from Home Depot.
People see my truck coming and think I spent thousands.
I can spray vehicles as well.......But why worship a paint job. And touch-ups are a perfect match every time using this method.

Here is a Starsky and Hutch rendition on a truck of mine. I swear I only have $40 in the whole paint job.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/noneshere/sets/72157603852795145/

I have done many different scheames , from pink and grey camoflage, dalmations, dairy cows , and many other prints all with Gloss Rustolium.

I'm presently restoring a professors 1965 Mustang in Rustolium hunter green.

Word of advice, never spray a car with a spray can, the paint never lays evenly , and the powder coat laying effect turns out to have a sponge effect that quickly retains water and fades off.and there is always overspray to avoid. Always use a "smooth cigar roller". Tape you trim and window edges off with duct tape , tighten the seams with a plastic credit card ,and trim the tape with a razor to leave a crisp edge. Allways use a Gloss paint so it is washable.
A base color will take about a day to apply by myself.
after a week of cure you can start your overlay patterns using the "Blue Tape" to trim your edges with.

I tell you the truth....I have easily made $5000.00 over the years doing these Rustolium paint jobs. They are cheap , easy and lots of fun to apply. I usually charge $100.00 for a 1 color base coat, and it only takes me a leasurly 8 hours to compleate . Yes I can totally paint a car and have it back to the person in 1 day for $100.00 plus the cost of materials($40)

Another good thing is I can strip the whole job with a 3500 PSI pressure washer and lay another scheme ,
With very little or no sanding involved.

The paint scheme on the truck has lasted about 3 years since originally done.

I am looking for a pressure washer to periodically wash my driveway, porch, house, etc. Is 2200PSI good enough?

Dan

Answer
I do a lot of pressure washing in my painting business. My washer is 3500 PSI / 4 gallons per minute. I never run it at full pressure. Most of the time its set at 1100 PSI. Pressure does not cause damage, impact from the water against the surface being washed is what causes damage. Lower pressure is one way to reduce impact. Other ways are using a wider fan tip and increasing distance from the surface.

the home i am renting needs a good cleaning! so i was thinking of doing that this weekend. not sure if i should go to Lowe's or home depot..... thanks for your input!
oh yeah how did it work did you just hook it up to a hose? i have well water does that matter?

Answer
Most rental yards have pressure washers. Its been a long time since I rented one. I would expect to pay $40-50/day. It hooks up to a regular garden hose. The only concern is if your well has enough gallons per minute for the washer to work properly. As a painting contractor I pressure wash many houses and decks every year. My big pressure washer is rated for 4 gallons per minute, my smaller one is 2.5 GPM. Before I hook it up I time how long it take the hose to fill a 5 gallon pail. If it takes longer than a minute I know not to use the bigger machine.
I don't recommend the rotating tip for beginners. Its true that it can do the job faster but it can do lots of damage if you are not careful. Sometimes the rotating feature gets stuck and leaves you with a narrow high pressure stream. Play it safe and use a 25 or 40 degree fan tip. Keep the water moving without stopping in one spot. That can cause damage if the water gouges the wood.
Most of the houses I work on have well water. I find about 1 in 10 don't have enough flow to use my 3500 psi, 4 GPM machine. I have only found 1 where I couldn't use my smaller washer.

Iam in the market for a gas powered pressure washer with 3000psi and about 2.5 gpm who makes the best one?

when releasing spray knozzle pressure washer stall

Answer
You don't provide much information as to the problem. I assume you are talking about a gas powered pressure washer. Sounds like the relief valve is not working. When you release the trigger the pressure should be relieved by a bypass valve.

Why won~t my power washer stay running when I realease the spray nozzle? Thanks?

john w

Answer
The pressure bypass valve, often called the unloader valve,is stuck. It's purpose is to route the pressurized water back into the pump so that when the nozzle is shut, the engine will not stall from over working.Try locating it and fiddling around with it to free it up.

would a lawnmower engine be best for a 2 person go kart?

Sam

my friends were asking on yahoo and trying to make a 4 person go kart but thinking a bout 2 2 person go kart so any ideas?

Answer
It's very hard to use a vertical shaft engine (like lawn mower) on a go kart. It has been done before but alot more torque and money than it's worth

A horizontal shaft engine is what you want (used on pressure washers, log splitters, etc)

You can buy good new china made clones of honda engines for cheap now.
6.5 HP, 196cc http://www.harborfreight.com/engines-generators/gas-engines/65-hp-horizontal-shaft-overhead-valve-gas-engine-66015.html

11 HP, 337cc http://www.harborfreight.com/engines-generators/gas-engines/11-hp-ohv-horizontal-shaft-gas-engine-66524.html

13 HP, 389cc http://www.harborfreight.com/engines-generators/gas-engines/13-hp-ohv-horizontal-shaft-gas-engine-66525.html

As a summer project me and my kids built 2 karts. Used harbor freight 6.5 HP $100 engines on both. It pulls me at 285 lbs just fine.

The top speed, the torque, etc of a go kart has more to do with gearing (sprocket sizes) than engine HP.

We built one from ground up, welded frame together and everything. Its geared at 5:1 and will top out at around 35 MPH, pull it has trouble starting off on a hill or pulling up steep hills even with my 120 lbs son on it.

The other one we did was a modded dingo frame, same engine, but used a jackshaft to gear it to 11.4:1. Top speed on it, is only around 19/20 mph but it has enough torque to spin the rear tires on pavement and leave black rubber marks. Pulls up hills like mad

Here's our karts http://rides.webshots.com/album/578816340NKgeYM

Would a pressure washer's pull cord not come out completely if it was low on oil?

pressure washer oil on Pressure washers, pressure washer,
pressure washer oil image

Ben D

I'm trying to fix my cousin's pressure washer and the only thing I noticed that could be wrong is the oil was low. It stopped working when she was pressure washing her deck. I just want to make sure before I go add new oil and have it turn out there's a non related engine problem or something. I checked the air filter and it's clean, the spark plug was connected properly, the gas is all new, and it didn't sit out in the cold so nothing froze inside.

Answer
How low was the oil when you got it? The pull cord recoil mech could be messed up. Or the cylinder could seized. Sounds to me since it stopped working while in use its seized.

what is the best psi to effectively remove grime and stains from all surfaces with a pressure washer?

i need to buy a pressure washer to start a small after-school business to earn some extra cash. i will need a gas pressure washer with enough power to clean driveways, walkways, fences, stone, brick, oil stains from garages, ext. what is the minimum PSI i need to be able to do these jobs effectively?

Answer
The more pressure you can get, the better. But also watch water volume too. The cleaning power of a pressure washer can be found by multiply pressure (psi) by water volume (GPM). Some manufacturers offer a lot of pressure with very little volume.

That said, 3000 psi is a good all around pressure. You can always lower the pressure by the type of nozzle that you use.

Hope this helps.

How much Horsepower does a Briggs and Stratton Pressure washer have with 8.75 ft/lbs of torque and 190cc?

ricksellsn

The torque values are derived at 3060 RPM's and Horsepower values are derived at 3600 RPM's.

Answer
horsepower is not directly connected to engine size. You would have to find the RPM at which it makes the max torque and use the formula:

hp = (torque(ft/lbs) * RPM) / 5252

EDIT:
in that case, using the formula mentioned, it produces 5.1 hp at 3060 RPM. While I still can't calculate the exact hp at 3600 RPM without the torque value at that RPM, I would imagine it's pretty much the same (probably an additional 0.1 or 0.2 hp).

Hello,
This time every year the outside of my house gets overtaken with cobwebs, dust and debris... I have stucco and it's a really messy job if you do not know what you're doing. Stucco is also sensitive to hard levels of water pressure and certain brushes. And so, every year I pay someone good money to clean it off... Is there an alternative cost effective solution?

Answer
My home has some stucco on the sides and if you don't buy a variable controlled pressure washer you can use the Windex or Clorox hose attached cleaners which work pretty well. The only thing about them is that they say you can clean the windows with them and I've found they really both leave streaks.

What's a good, small, power washer to buy for the home?

Jade Orchi

I'd like one that's not horribly expensive (less than $100 dollars) but cleans well. I'd like to use it to wash my car and sidewalks mostly. Thanks! :D

Answer
For 100 dollars or less you will need to look at the electric pressure washers.

Do not store the electric machines in an outside building during the winter. I did not know that the water does not drain fully from these machines. The water froze inside and ruined it.

You want to consider two things when you buy a pressure washer. The gallons per minute (gpm) and the pressure per square inch (psi).

The GPM is the amount of water flowing. The higher number this is, the quicker you will get the job finished.

The PSI is the blasting force of the water. If this is variable/adjustable the pressure washer will be more versatile and can be used for more things. Machines with lower pressure will not effectively work to remove stuborn dirt such as some you may have on concrete. Machines with very high pressure can remove paint, though, and can also splinter wood.

I'm looking for a good quality pressure washer for cleaning cars. It needs to be able to draw from a water tank without assistance, and it needs to be reliable. About $200 is my budget, but I'd like to keep it as cheap as possible while still keeping quality.

Answer
For $200 you are not going to get any kind of quality pressure washer.
You need a washer which operates at 1800 PSI or higher pressure output to perform effectively. They start at around $350 - $400 dollars. I do not know of any commercially available pressure washers which will draw from an unpressurized tank - they all are designed to operate from a pressurized hose delivering 3-5 GPM @ 20+ PSI.

Answer
For cars only you simply need a 2000 psi..You definately want one with a ohc engine on it..not the common mower type engine...Most "honda" engines on pressure washers are ohc's (overhead cams)..get one that has a gun that has exchangeable tips and not the ones that you twist the heads to adjust it...these bend and clog up and require buuying a whloe new gun... 5 hp is plenty good..3,5 actually for just cars will

What are good hose replacement for AR 383 pressure washer?

Mr. Aztec

I have a AR 383 (blue clean) pressure washer which it came with a detergent bottle (which I find it useless). I want to replace the hose and as upgrade the gun with the wands. Anyone recommends me a good pressure gun to buy where I can attach a foam cannon and as well with good wands. Also I would like to replace the hose in order to make it compatible with the pressure gun.

Answer
The AR Blue Clean line uses proprietary connections so that you cannot use standard hoses and guns as replacements. This is like what Apple does with the iPhone. Fortunately, there are some adapters out there. Home Depot sells one, I'll put the link in my sources below. With this you could now attach standard hoses and guns/accessories. BE makes good guns and foam cannons, and goodyear makes good hoses. There are many other quality guns and hoses out there as well, BE's are just easier to find than some of the others.

How do I Descale a MiTM 2003 steam pressure washer I have 2 of these steam pressure washers , both well used and the local MiTM Dealer does not do the descaling . I think there is a chemical to use but I don't know what it is or where to get it . Considering the $5906.00 price tag on the units I dont want to mess them up.

Answer
You need to pump the heating coil full of a mild acid solution and let it work over night. I would recommend either vinegar or citric acid -
Muratic acid will be faster ( about 1 hour soak time ) but only use it if you are certain the coil is made of stainless steel tubing, if the coils are not stainless steel it can corrode them - the milder acids will not do so.

Is it legal to use pressure washer to clean car?

Tom

Hi, I would like to know if its legal to use pressure washer to clean car on a public road ?

Answer
Pressure washing contractors do it every day, the legal issue has to do with reclaiming the water. Some cities are mandating that if you wash a car with a pressure washer, you must have a system to vacuum the water back up. They state that cars get many contaminants that should not be washed down the drain. Some cities will require you to pick the water up, AND have a special permit to do so. Check my sources- I have included a forum discussion on this among pressure washer contractors, and a document from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. Check with your county, city, and state for the mandates to make sure you are not breaking any laws.

Which pressure washer should I buy to use around the yard?

sirdufus69

I've looked at a few websites and see that I can get gas powered washers for upwards of $400 and also get small electric ones for as low as $80. I understand that the big difference seems to be the pressure that each puts out (PSI) but that's all I understand.

Can I get a compressor so I can say attach a paint sprayer, a tire inflator and then attach a head so I can pressure wash? Or do I have to get a compressor for paint and air and then a pressure washer as well? I'm mostly interested in the washing part but would be nice to have an all in one solution if that is even available?

Here is what I want to do...wash the cars, RV, kids bikes, driveway, vinyl siding on the house and basic yardwork type of chores.

Please help me figure out what to buy?

Answer
If it were me... I'd go to the local rental equipment shop and ask the guy in charge of what he thinks. Why - because he would be the one very familiar with what you'd be looking for. As that's what he rents, and is very knowledgeable about.

The paint is very chipped and can flake off by just touching it!

Answer
hey tony...

a small pressure washer capable of delivering 15-1800 pounds should be plenty - tip size is important also when pressure washing. the typical tip sizes are 40,25,15 & 0 degree tips...a 40 degree tip is similar in size to those used in self serve car washes - and that may be plenty for removing loose flaking paint. a 25 degree tip will put a little more force to the more stubborn areas without much fear of damaging the wood. a 15 degree tip is your chisel tip and should only be used on very difficult areas where paint is heaviest and adhering the tightest. a 0 degree tip, or an oscillating 0 degree tip, (or bullet point) should never be used on wood - it will damage the wood quickly.

if you're renting or buying a pressure washer for your job, the gpm is as important as the psi - a smaller, gas powered homeowner type of pressure washer may deliver 2-3 gallons of water per minute at 1500 pounds of pressure while a contractors model may deliver 7-8 gallons per minute at the same pressure (the homeowner electric models deliver approximately 1/2 - 1 gallon per minute and should probably be used only for car washes and light cleaning)...for the job you've described, the gas powered homeowner unit will work fine...

if you've never power washed before, it is a great way to prep a surface prior to painting or staining and will cut the prep time down considerably (and besides, they're kinda fun to operate)...if you use latex (acrylic) paint or stain as a finish, you'll need to wait only a day or so of warm weather before painting. and while pressure washing, be sure to wear rain gear and boots 'cause you will get wet...

good luck on your project and check out my previous post on how to finish wood fences.

Graffiti is removed from bricks with a pressure washer and chemicals. I'd call rental places and explain what you want to do. 4000 psi sounds like a bit much - maybe 2500 or 3000 would be a better starting point.

My pressure washer motor is a 3.5 hp Tecumseh 4-cycle motor: model # H35-45696X-B with a DOM: 6074R. The only identifying mark on the pressure washer pump is a circular stamp in the casing showing 7 raised dots out of 12 spaces, with 95 in the middle of the stamp.

Answer
Both Kärcher and Campbell Hausfeld have used Tecumseh engines for their pressure washers. However, the smallest engine I have found for either manufacturer is 4 HP. A manual for Kärcher's pressure washer is at:
http://www.karcher-usa.com/support/downloads/pdfs/usermanuals/9139-1820.pdf
A manual for Campbell Hausfeld's pressure washer is at:
http://www.campbellhausfeld.net/wcsstore/FashionFlow/pdfs/manual01/466900_0207_web.pdf

The circular stamp may be a date code, perhaps the seventh month (July) of 1995. That would be consistent with your having a 3.5 HP engine, which would be considered too small by today's standards.

I took apart my pressure washer pump and gear oil has spilled all over. How do I reassemble?

I took apart my Karcher K2400HH pressure washer pump unit from the engine and now gear oil is all over on the ground. I think I took the whole pump unit out and now I need to reassemble it back again. How do I put it back together, where do I fill the oil back in and what type of gear oil should I use? Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
I had the same problem with a Generac Model No 1537 2400PSI washer.!!! This unit has a 5.5 HP Honda engine.
I'm a builder, and one of my customers gave me this pressure washer after he had problems with it. Seems he left it with the gas in it for years and gummed up the carb. He told me his daughter ran it without the water turned on and burned up the pressure pump. He bought a new pump, but had no idea how to replace it. When I removed the old pump, I had a flood of oil on the garage floor. The new pump was a Briggs and Stratton kit #193473GS, and did not have the wet bearings of the original. It bolted right up to the bottom of the engine and works like a charm.. It took a little cleaning with Gum-out to get the engine running, but now it works fine.
I remember that there was a drain plug on the side of the pump shaft housing, but nowhere in the service manual did it tell you what weight oil went in there ,or how much.

There is no easy way to remove sound paint (but why would you want to?). If you want to remove loose paint to prepare for painting, use a pressure washer. You want a gasoline powered one, not electric. About a 13hp engine, delivering about 5 gal./min. @ 3000 psi. You can rent these. These are dangerous, get instruction from the rental place. Do not use the 0 deg (red) tip; it will destroy your stucco.

Answer
Depends where you live and what part you need.

Its likely that some parts of that washer were used in other Coleman products. A shop specializing in small machine servicing (lawn mowers, compressors, golf carts etc) might be able to offer some suggestions.

I know of two such shops within 10 minutes of my office (near chicago) but if you live in a smaller city they might be harder to come by.

Coleman pressure washer- Anybody have non-working one? I need a pump part?

Old enough

Coleman no longer makes pressure washers. I broke a very small part off my pump. Before you send your broken washer to the dump, I would be happy to buy just this piece I need or your entire non-working pressure washer if you are close to SF Bay area. Mine is the 4hp model but I believe all the pumps were the same.
I erred in my original post. The part I need is for the water distribution manifold (adjusting screw) and not the pump. The pump works fine and there is no mfg name on it so it must be proprietary.

Answer
the pump was NOT made by Coleman. there should be a manufacturers name on the pump. contact Coleman and see if they can give you the name of the manufacturer of the water distributation manifold.

Answer
Certainly I agree in part with answer 1, as Ebay may seem like a great bargain, but if you're talking about something like a Karcher Pressure Washer, the shipping cost will likely be more than the bid/win.

Karcher is already at the low end of that type of tool/appliance anyway, and the money you save in shipping, even using gasoline to get to a store that sells them, might help pay a utility bill for a month
