IS IT DANGEROUS TO CLEAN THE INSIDE OF YOUR EYELIDS WITH A HIGH PRESSURE WASHER??

johankvarf

.......................................

Answer
Yes you could cause damage to your eyeballs if you direct a pressure washer at them. The best way to clean your eyelids is the full body clean. Put the nozzle of the pressure washer up your Anus and turn on, this will direct the water jet up through your body and all the dirt will come out of your mouth and eyeball sockets leaving your insides nice and clean.

Pressure washing business suggestion, anyone. ?

paul

Hi. I work full time now but I have the weekends off. I'd like to make some extra money starting my own side business as a home pressure washer. Ive pressure washed before, but it was just on my own home. Before I jump into it, I'd like some suggestions from anyone who does it or has done it.
Besides the nozzels, extra hoses, ladders, safety gear, business labels on my car, and business's cards what else should I invest in to get ready. Also what would be a reasonable charge rate?
Any advice and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Keep in mind it's a power "Washer" not a paint stripper.

Some people use them thinking to strip paint from wood and only succeed in forcing water into wood. Ever try to paint, seal or stain wet wood?
Always maintain proper distance from the surface to be cleaned so as not to cause damages.
Pay attention to how siding over-laps and direct spray in the ideal direction to Avoid getting water in, under and behind where it doesn't belong.

The overhead for your business can easily be kept to a minimum so you can offer great deals to home owners while maintaining profits..
If you decide to buy a truck with the power washer secured and set up within
Your over-head will increase and decrease your profits.
K.I.S.S or (Keep It Simple Stupid)...my dad would say.

I typically get between 1-200 dollars to wash a ranch and it takes about 4-6 hours including a final coat with a finish wax.
Things that can cause the price to go up would be when I have to work around items and plantings around the house or in cases I need to provide scaffolding to reach high places.

most car detailers would say a pressure washer will do more damage to your car paint than good
Perhaps it will be useful on like tires.

If you want to buy something to make your washing easier, you should look at a foam gun/cannon/lance instead.

Why would a car stall after having the engine washed with a pressure washer?

Ryan B

My brother recently test drove a 2001 dodge intrepid after the used car dealer power washed the engine. It stalled on us 3 times while test driving but it couldn't have been the battery because it started right back up with no problem. The dealer thought he may have gotten some plugs wet while washing, so he replaced them the next morning and it ran fine for a few days then started stalling again. What would cause this?

Next, I test drove a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited after the engine was pressure washed and it stalled about 6 times during our drive. Again, it couldn't have been the battery because it started up immediately.

Both cars drove fine with the exception of stalling. They were both washed in garages but it's still winter in iowa so it would have been forty degrees in either garage at the very most. The only common denominators i can identify is that both engines were washed in the cold and they are both made by Chrysler. Please help.

Answer
Typically pressure washing an engine is not a good idea unless you make it a point to cover all of the electronics which can be a task and most people will not do it. I don't think it is the make of the car that is the problem. It may be the salesman trying to cover up a problem by washing down the engines. When I clean an engine, I use low pressure water, such as a regular water hose with some all purpose grease cutter. Then i wait just a few minutes for the majority of the water to drip off and crank it up and let it run for a few minutes until the remainder of the water is evaporated. But, I have strayed away from your question, yes, if the pressure washer is the common denominator, then pressure washing is the problem. Are the vehicles from the same car dealer? If so, go somewhere else. I would never buy a vehicle that stalled during a test drive. A vehicle is a big investment. Therefore, it must perform perfectly for me to purchase it.

pressure washer remove wax on car ?

greecegr

so i had my car waxed and polished ..the finish is great and all but where i live we get a fine thin layer of dust no matter where when or how.. my question is being that i have to wash my car often (like say 3-4 times a week) the only way that they wash a car here is using pressure washer and than drying it with a special towel...the Q : will all of this washing remove wax? my car looks shiny swirl-less and i dont want my car paint to look dull or somehow old. what should i do? reduce washing (which is very unlikely in my case) or wax more often??? thanks for reading all this.

Answer
pressure washers usually don't remove the wax. unless the water is heated. it will over a long period of time. but usually not if you strip and wax like every year or so.
but it likely will do it sooner regardless of temps and soap if you pressure wash 2-3 times a week for the life of the vehicle. which i don't recommend you do.

what pressure washers do is get under any flaw in old paint and will try to lift it. also gets under trim and tries to do the same.
if you really care about the finish and don't want any micro scratches to show over time, never use a dry applicator/duster. never put any towels, mitts, to it unless it's presoaked.

in between actual washes,
i would give it a garden hose rinse when ever needed. buy myself a chamois. if you have a lot of pollen in between washes, you're kinda SOL. need to do an actual presoak and wash to get that off. if left, it will make you strip wax and start over as it kinda melts into the surface of wax. but better the wax than your paint.

Any company that sells the presssure washers might be able to give you a lead on a trailer. Also check at marine yards and second hand marine stores. They are good places for leads for that sort of thing. Ebay might be a possibility. These links may be of some help. Best of luck with finding what you need.

Is it legal to use pressure washer to clean car?

Tom

Hi, I would like to know if its legal to use pressure washer to clean car on a public road ?

Answer
Pressure washing contractors do it every day, the legal issue has to do with reclaiming the water. Some cities are mandating that if you wash a car with a pressure washer, you must have a system to vacuum the water back up. They state that cars get many contaminants that should not be washed down the drain. Some cities will require you to pick the water up, AND have a special permit to do so. Check my sources- I have included a forum discussion on this among pressure washer contractors, and a document from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. Check with your county, city, and state for the mandates to make sure you are not breaking any laws.

how do I use a plumbing jetter for a basement drain?

icekold009

My basement drain backs up with water ever time I run the washing machine.

Answer
How It Works

Set up your pressure washer outside to get started. Attach your pressure washer hose to your pressure washer and run this hose to the inside or outside drain you want to clean. Remove your gun/wand and attach the provided ball valve, jumper hose and hose reel. Install the provided jetter hose onto the hose reel and attach the desired nozzle for the job at hand. You are now ready to use your existing pressure washer as a sewer jetter and clean your drain pipes.

Using a power washer to unclog a roof drain?

sean94110

We got our first storm of the season and I noticed today that the roof drain is slow draining/clogged. It's a flat roof that slopes into a 3" cast iron drain pipe. I put a snake down and it stops about 6 feet down where the pipe has a slight bend (maybe 60 degrees).

The pipe has a cleanout further down in the garage but these pipes are probably as old as the house (1926)and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to get them off without hurting myself in the process.

So my question is - would it be wrong to try blasting water from my 1500psi power washer down the drain to see if I could clear the blockage? Any other ideas?

Answer
A sewer jetter is a machine designed to clean out pipes and lines, and it is really just a pressure washer with a pulsing valve and special hose/nozzles. You can even buy a jetter valve for your pressure washer to turn it into a sewer jetter. I will include a link in my sources to an article on hose size vs. pipe size. I also explained sewer jetter's in a recent Yahoo Answers question, so I'll link it as well. Bottom line, it is worth a shot, and if it doesn't work, you may be able to clear it out by getting some sewer jetter hose and nozzles that are designed for this kind of think.

What's the best electric pressure washer for detailing cars?

black_ice_

I'm looking for a good quality pressure washer for cleaning cars. It needs to be able to draw from a water tank without assistance, and it needs to be reliable. About $200 is my budget, but I'd like to keep it as cheap as possible while still keeping quality.

Answer
For $200 you are not going to get any kind of quality pressure washer.
You need a washer which operates at 1800 PSI or higher pressure output to perform effectively. They start at around $350 - $400 dollars. I do not know of any commercially available pressure washers which will draw from an unpressurized tank - they all are designed to operate from a pressurized hose delivering 3-5 GPM @ 20+ PSI.

Please explain how pressure washer work and its pressure generating principle. How big psi can 12V can generate

adhikari_s

I am looking for a pressure pump(washer) that generates 1500-5000 psi applying 12V DC battery. How many batteries required ?
Can I buy such pumps in the market ? please give more information on it.

Answer
My pressure washer has a 5 horsepower motor and creates about 200 psi. The short answer is that car starter motors create 5 to 10 hp for a short while but get hot fast. One battery will do the job for a very short while. The easier way is to use an electric washer, convert the 12 vdc to 120vAC with an inverter and wash away. The amount of batteries will depend on how long you want to operate at high pressure. The more the better. Can you buy such a pump, sure, convert a small home electric unit. Another good source for this stuff is West Marine, check their website and they have a great tech staff and no I don't work there.

pressure washer adjustable?

slapoutz

do they make adjustable psi pressure washers if so where can i get one i want a gas i know they make adjustable electric ones. i want a 2600-3500psi adjustable.

btw 2600 psi wont strip the paint off your car. but it wont clean your rims lol
so if i buy a 3500 psi power washer i can get a nozzle that can take the psi down to 2600 psi?

Answer
Generally you adjust the jet with either replacement nozzles or an adjustable nozzle. An adjustable pressure pump as compared to a fixed pressure pump is certainly going to add complexity and cost to the unit. Buy the higher PSI unit and add distance and wider nozzles to bring down pressure as neccessary to protect delicate surfaces.

HOT electric water pressures vs. COLD electric water pressures

pearee

Which is better for what duty? Is hot or cold better for vehicles, side walks, vinyl siding, windows, brick buildings/houses, wood, removing paint/stains, etc. And also- what is a good PSI for these sort of things? Thinking between 2000 and 4000? What is best..? Thanks!
YES!!! I'm sorry I do mean pressure washers!!!

Answer
Are you talking about a pressure washer? There are pressure washers used primarily by commercial companies that do in fact provide hot water, but these are very expensive. Regular cold water pressure washers come in a variey of psi levels, usually starting in at around 1,500 psi for an electric one, and around 2,000 psi for a gas powered one. The higher the psi, the more cleaning capability it has. The trick is to use a chemcial designed for the task you are doing, allow the chemical to "work", then rinse it off with your pressure washer. Far too many people rely on water pressure alone, which (depending on what it is that you're cleaning) may or may not do the job. For example, for vinyl siding, soffit and fascia, etc. I've used a mixture of bleach and liquid Spic 'n Span in a pump-up garden sprayer. Put a good amount of each in the sprayer, slowly add water then apply the mixture to the house. Allow it to work for 10 minutes or so, then follow up with a good pressure washer rinse. This kills the "critters", mold, mildew, and removes the dirt etc. For my painted concrete driveway, and brickwork around the house, I use "Rust-Aid" which is available at Home Depot. Apply full strength, allow it to work, then blast it off with the pressure sprayer.

Hoseless pressure washer?

xxfirerica

I have a townhouse with no access to water hose. The front entrance always gets bird droppings around windows and stucco and get dirty. Is there such a thing as a hoseless pressure washer to blast away dirt and keep front entrance clean since i have no access to water hose?

Answer
Yes there is, but they cost a little extra. You can get a tank for your pressure washer so that you will not have to hook it up to a faucet. Most of these pressure washers come on a trailer or a skid, though, since the tanks are so large. You will then be able to fill the tank somewhere else, and then use it around your townhouse. It should be noted, though, that a hose is still required to run from the outlet on the pressure washer to the wand or attachment you are using to clean with.

To clean stucco, you will not want to use too much pressure. I'll include a link to a guide in my sources that says you should set your washer somewhere between 1,500 and 2,500 PSI and still test it on an inconspicuous area before washing the whole wall with it.

What does trailer mounted pressure washer mean?

kfount400

And when would you use them?

Answer
It means what it says. It is a high pressure washer that is mounted on a trailer that can come to the job site and do the cleaning. Decks, fences, sidewalks, siding.

You could use them before you paint your house, or seal your deck, or anytime you need to have something cleaned.

good luck.

what is the best engine to buy to make a small light homemade go kart go fast?

Troubled C

and i am looking for cheap alternatives
and if u live in australia like me where could you buy them

Answer
if you want a "utility " type engine like whats on pressure washers, mowers etc. the honda style is a good choice. the honda gx160-200(5.5-6.5 hp) and or its cheap clones is common in most parts of the world and is pretty sweet. bathtub head with push rods, but puts out pretty good power. to get revs over 4800 rpm pull the springs from a briggs 5 hp flat head and cram them in. the briggs 5 hp is good too as is the briggs OHV 6.5. the robin subaru EX design is a nice engine but limited in RPM. if you can do a setup that uses a engine/trany from a dirt bike that works good and can be very fast but is a lot of work for most people. just use what you can i guess. with the mower type engines you get a bit more high rpm output if you port/polish the head/block often like with the briggs and hondas. custom fitting bigger carbs, exhaust pipes, special cams, higher comp ratios, methanol fuel etc also are options but more work. its hard to be cheap and get a fast kart unless you put in a lot of work. for simple small karts i like the honda gx 200. with 10/1 compression and methanol fuel it goes fast.

How does the tightening force applied to a bolt affect its strength?

BOB R

If a bolt is rated with a tensile strength 10,000 psi and it is tightened to a force of 5,000 psi, how much pressure can tha bolt hold back? Is there a chart or a easy to use definitive guide available?

Answer
All Fateners have a rated Tensil and shear force strength.

The Premium Captive socket head screws have a tensil strength in the order of 80-100,000 psi.

Tightening torgue is critical, both in shear and pulling. A captive design must have a flat washer and a helical lock washer.

See the following link for specifications:

How to clean vinyl siding on my house?

luckylinda

Answer
Cleaning Vinyl
Cleaning vinyl siding is a snap with the right tools. If your siding isn't in need of scrubbing, spraying it with a hose can wash away the dirt and grime that has accumulated throughout the year. If you need a cleaning solvent, some ordinary dish soap or laundry detergent mixed with water will do the trick. Where there are troubled areas, such as mildew, a mild solution of 1 quart of bleach, ¾ gallons of water and a small amount of detergent. Scrub the areas with a soft-bristled, long-handled brush.

If scrubbing with a brush is going to be too much work, you can wash your siding with a power washer, which can be rented at your local home improvement store or other equipment rental business. Most homes can be pressure washed with a 2200 psi or higher washer.

To wash, follow these simple steps:

Turn off all power to the outside lights that may get wet.
Ensure that all your windows are closed and spray away from doors and windows.
If you have shrubbery or flowers below, make sure you cover them with plastic so no cleaning solution drips on them.
Start at the top and work your way down.
Be sure to rinse your cleaning solution off the siding before it dries.

What cleaning situations would you use a pressure washer?

kfount400

Answer
A pressure washer has different settings on it. You use the light setting for windows, medium setting for siding, vehicles, boats, and play equipment. The heavy setting is for brick, mortar, concrete, and other hard,non-forgiving surfaces that you aren't worried about peeling paint or getting banged up by the force of the water.

Pressure washer for Car?

bibi

my husband is thinking to buy a pressure washer , main reason is to wash his car, but also to use it around the house, drive way etc...but we have no idea which one to buy, which PSI is strong enought to clean the car without damaging the car. He baby his car very much!
Does anyone know what is the PSI at the car wash?? is there any pressure washer that has adjustible pressure?
Thank you!
does anyone know what is the PSI at the Coin car wash.

Answer
on pressure washers the PSI is not as important as the GPM (gallons per minute) so look for pressure washers that have a higher GPM rating. also you adjust the PSI by changing nozzles. make sure there are a variety of nozzles avaliable or the nozzle itself is adjustable. this ensures a wide variety of uses. you would want low pressure to say clean exterior of house vs clean car or driveway. a typical car wash uses 500 to 700 psi. you can find them at sears, lowes, home depot, harbour freight and many auto parts store.

Electric pressure washers?

Mike S

I have seen these Husky 1800 psi electric pressure washers at Home depot for about a $100.00 and I was wanting to know if these units are any good. I have read some user reviews on the Internet and have talked to some people about these and I am getting conflicting answers if they are any good. I was thinking about buying one to use around the home. Such as, cleaning the patio, porch, the driveway and so on. Any help will be appreciated. Thank You.

Answer
I used a Karcher 1500 psi model to clean a 100 foot driveway heavily soiled from oak leaves for 3 years and it worked great although a bit slow. Also used it to pressure wash a deck, garage and siding with no problems...I'd recommend them for minor jobs.

What PRESSURE WASHER should I buy?

jerseymom

Looking to purchase a gas pressure washer. Don't want to spend more than I have to. Traditional residential cleaning, siding kid toys, patio furniture, etc. I was looking at a 2600 but recently heard I need a 3000??? Any thoughts? Any specific models you like?? Thanks!!
it will be used frequently and those crummy 1500's don't do anything for siding. i know i need gas i'm just not sure if the 2600 is enough or if i should go for the 3000

Answer
A 2600psi or a 3000psi gas pressure washer can do some pretty serious damages but it doesn't mean you couldn't use those units for your applications. Many gas powered pressure washers will allow you to adjust the power level. You could use those pressure washers to wash your car and windows or strip paint off your old wooden fence. High power pressure washers will be A LOT more versatile than those underpowered 1500psi or 1800psi ones.

Honda is famous for their small gasoline engines. Like their cars and lawnmowers, their gas pressure washers also live up to this reputation. They are easy to start. They are easy on gas. And they will last for who knows how long with just regular maintenance. A 2600psi pressure washer is capable of making dents (with the "right" nozzle) on your stucco (or even your drive way) already and it will be good enough for residential cleaning. But since power levels could be adjusted, it won't hurt if you get yourself a bigger unit (if you think extra power is worth the cost). Our local Costco stores sells Honda pressure washers for under $500. Maybe you should check yours too. :)

PS: Be careful with those pressure washers. Always check the power setting before each use. I used the washer to wash my lawn chairs once. I didn't know the washer was set on full power and the jet stream cut the fabric on one of the chairs right open. There's another time when I used pressure washer to wash my motorcycle. Once again, I forgot to check the power setting and the first blast cut the saddle (seat) right open. After that incident, I ALWAY check the settings. LOL

PPS: Don't be tempted to test how powerful the jet stream is with your hand. Many high pressure washers are very capable of giving you very nasty cuts.

Where to dump water from pressure washer?

Imtheprez

Im thinking of buying a commercial pressure washer...after I do a job where would be a acceptable place to dump the dirty water, without getting a fine?

Answer
A pressure washer does not collect the dirty water. The dirty water is going to be on the ground. You need waterproof sheets on the ground to collect it. Contact your local EPA office for instructions on what to do with it.

Need help designing overload protection for my rotary phase converter. I don't want to burn out my motors.

tonymonton

I'm looking over the NEC code book.
I am using a 15hp motor for the rotary phase converter and it will power a 7.5hp pressure washer motor.
The rated amps for the 15hp motor is 38amps. So, I think a 50amp circuit breaker on the single phase input should be adequate overload protection for the the 15hp motor. What do you think?
I'm not sure what overload protection to use for the 3 phase connection to the 7.5hp motor. What do you recommend? Specifics are appreciated, such as make and model # of overload protection. Or at least generic ratings that I can use to look up a make and model for pricing.

Answer
The electrical wholesale company will size it. The overload unit is usually marked in full load so you set it to full load of your motor. This will give 15% overload. (Some may be marked at trip load and you set it 15% above). Graybar, GE Supply, Grainger, Wesco, Rexel etc etc will tell you. The single phase connection must be seriesed through all three overload elements.

Fuse or breaker will be 2-3 times full load, depending on type. (Instantaneous breaker will be 8 times)

A 15HP single phase motor will pull more than 38amps anyway.

As I mentioned before you need both if you want overload and short circuit protection. JUST A BREAKER IS NO GOOD. IT DOESN"T PROTECT FROM OVERLOAD.

Overheating car!?

kittyhi2u

I think the cooling fan in my car isnt working, which would make my car overheat, but how do I check the coolant fluid? I have a Daewoo Leganza and couldnt find it in the manual. Also, if it is the fan, do I have to order one from like Japan, or are there places in the US that have or make them? Would I have to order a whole new one, or would I just get the current one repaired? Is there anything I can do to prevent myself from getting an entre new fan?

Answer
Don't panic. Parts are available in the US.

This is not an uncommon problem in the age of electric cooling fans. You should have two plastic bottles under the hood of your car: one for windshield washer fluid and the other for radiator overflow coolant (and where you can add fluid as necessary and check the level, which is different when the engine is hot or cold...due to thermal expansion). You should also have a cap on the radiator which should only be opened with the engine cold to check for the presence of fluid in the radiator proper.

There could be many causes:

Overheating can be caused by anything that decreases the cooling systemâs ability to absorb, transport and dissipate heat, such as a low coolant level, loss of coolant (through internal or external leaks), poor heat conductivity inside the engine because of accumulated deposits in the water jackets, a defective thermostat that doesnât open, poor airflow through the radiator, a slipping fan clutch, an inoperative electric cooling fan, a collapsed lower radiator hose, an eroded or loose water pump impeller or even a defective radiator cap.

One of natureâs basic laws says that heat always flows from an area of higher temperature to an area of lesser temperature, never the other way around. The only way to cool hot metal, therefore, is to keep it in constant contact with a cooler liquid. And the only way to do that is to keep the coolant in constant circulation. As soon as the circulation stops, either because of a problem with the water pump, thermostat or loss of coolant, temperatures begin to rise and the engine starts to overheat.

The coolant also has to get rid of the heat it soaks up while passing through the block and head(s). So the radiator must be capable of doing its job, which requires the help of an efficient cooling fan at slow speeds.

Finally, the thermostat must be doing its job to keep the engineâs average temperature within the normal range. If the thermostat fails to open, it will effectively block the flow of coolant and the engine will overheat.

What To Check

⢠Thermostat - Severe overheating can often damage a good thermostat. If the engine has overheated because of another problem, the thermostat should be tested or replaced before the engine is returned to service.

One way to check the thermostat is to start the engine and feel the upper radiator hose (or use an infrared noncontact thermometer to read its temperature). The hose should not feel uncomfortably hot until the engine has warmed-up and the thermostat opens. If the hose does not get hot, it means the thermostat is not opening.

Another way to test the thermostat is to remove it and dip it into a pan of boiling water (it should open). The exact opening temperature can be checked by using a thermometer.

If the thermostat needs to be replaced, install one with the same temperature rating as the original. Most cars and light trucks since 1971 require thermostats with 192- or 195-degree ratings. Using a cooler thermostat (160 or 180) in an attempt to "cure" a tendency to overheat can increase fuel and oil consumption, ring wear and emissions. On newer vehicles with computerized engine controls, the wrong thermostat can prevent the computer system from going into closed loop resulting in major performance and emission problems if the engine fails to reach its normal operating temperature.

⢠Cooling system leaks - Loss of coolant because of a leak is probably the most common cause of overheating. Possible leak points include hoses, the radiator, heater core, water pump, thermostat housing, head gasket, freeze plugs, automatic transmission oil cooler, cylinder head(s) and block.

Make a careful visual inspection of the entire cooling system, and then pressure test the cooling system and radiator cap. A pressure test will reveal internal leaks such as seepage past the head gasket as well as cracks in the head or block. A leak-free system should hold pressure for at least a minute or more.

Itâs important to pressure test the radiator cap, too, because a weak cap (or one with too low a pressure rating for the application) will lower the coolantâs boiling point and can allow coolant to escape from the radiator.

⢠Fan - With mechanical fans, most overheating problems are caused by a faulty fan clutch - though a missing fan shroud can reduce the fanâs cooling effectiveness by as much as 50 percent (depending on the fanâs distance from the radiator), which may be enough to cause the engine to overheat in hot weather or when working hard.

Defective fan clutches are a common and often overlooked cause of overheating. The shear characteristics of the clutch fluid gradually deteriorates over time, with an average loss in drive efficiency of about 200 rpm per year. Eventually slippage reaches the point where effective cooling is no longer possible and overheating results. (On average, the life of a fan clutch is about the same as a water pump. If one needs to be replaced, the other usually does too.)

If the fan clutch shows signs of fluid leakage (oily streaks radiating outward from the hub of the clutch), spins freely with little or no resistance when the engine is off or wobbles when the fan is pushed in or out, it needs to be replaced.

With an electric cooling fan, check to see that the fan cycles on when the engine gets hot and when the air conditioner is on. If the fan fails to come on, check the fan motor wiring connections, relay and temperature sensor. Try jumping the fan directly to the battery. If it runs, the problem is in the wiring, relay or sensor. If it fails to run, the fan motor is bad and needs replaced.

⢠Water pump - Any wobble in the pump shaft or seepage would call for replacement. In some instances, a pump can cause an engine to overheat if the impeller vanes are badly eroded due to corrosion or if the impeller has come loose from the shaft. The wrong pump may also cause an engine to overheat. Some engines with serpentine drive belts require a special water pump that turns in the opposite direction of those used on the same engine with ordinary V-belts.

⢠Belts & hoses - Check belt tension and condition. A loose belt that slips may prevent the water pump from circulating coolant fast enough and/or the fan from turning fast for proper cooling.

The condition of the hoses should also be checked and replaced if they are over 5 years old.

Sometimes a lower radiator hose will collapse under vacuum at high speed and restrict the flow of coolant from the radiator into the engine. This can happen if the reinforcing spring inside the hose is missing or damaged.

⢠Radiator - The most common problems radiators fall prey to are clogging (both internal and external) and leaks. Dirt, bugs and debris can block air flow through the core and reduce the radiatorâs ability to dissipate heat. Internal corrosion and an accumulation of deposits can likewise inhibit coolant circulation and reduce cooling. A good way to find clogs is to use an infrared thermometer to "scan" the surface of the radiator for cold spots. If clogged, the radiator should be removed for cleaning or be replaced.

Backflushing the cooling system and/or using chemical cleaners can remove rust and hard water scale, but may do little to open up a clogged radiator.

When refilling the cooling system, be sure you get it completely full. Air pockets in the head(s), heater core and below the thermostat can interfere with proper coolant circulation and cooling. If the cooling system has no bleeder valves to vent air, you may have to temporarily loosen a heater hose to get all the air out of the system.

⢠Excessive exhaust backpressure - A clogged catalytic converter is usually the culprit here, but donât overlook the possibility of a crushed pipe or a collapsed double wall pipe. Check intake vacuum at idle. If it reads low and continues to drop, inspect the exhaust system.

⢠Retarded or overadvanced ignition timing (may also contribute to detonation and preignition).

⢠Overheated incoming air - On older vehicles with a carburetor or throttle body injection, check the operation of the heated air intake system on the air cleaner. If the temperature control valve is stuck so only heated air from around the exhaust manifold is drawn into the air cleaner, it may contribute to detonation and/or overheating. Also check the heat riser valve for manifold heat on older V6 and V8 engines. If stuck shut, it may be overheating the intake manifold.

⢠Dragging brakes - A caliper thatâs sticking or a parking brake that isnât releasing may be making the engine work too hard.

⢠Overworking the engine. The cooling systems in many passenger cars today are marginal and have little excess capacity to handle extra heat generated by towing or high speed mountain driving in hot weather.

new boiler system....help needed from you lovely peeps :0)?

arainbow

Hi all, We've recently bought a 5 bed house with high ceilings (sounds much grander than it is, trust me lolol) but the boiler, whilst it works fine, as do the radiators etc, looks like it's circa 1900....as does the rest of the house lol.
In reality it's maybe a 70's boiler??
Water pressure is rubbish though and hot water comes out like a 'half turned tap'!!

I was advised by british gas to get a new boiler as mine sounds like "KABOOM" when it fires and it's a monster lol.....plus our first quarterly bill for gas is £1,200!!
EEEeeeekkk, AAARRgghhh! Now you see my problem......

I've had 2 quotes for a new boiler etc and both say I shouldn't have a combi boiler with the amount of 'baths' we'll have (eventually it'll have a bathroom, 2 ensuites, a cloakroom) but one plumber says my whole pipework needs to be changed as the new pressure system (it's all beyond me!) CAN'T work with the existing pipes.
The second plumber has quoted with only changing a few unsightly ones (in some places it's like spaghetti junction with pipes!) etc etc but hasn't mentioned anything about the pipes not being able to take the 'new pressure boiler' or whatever....again, over my head!
One plumber is MUCH cheaper than the other and as we begged, borrowed and stole (not stole quite but you get the drift lol) to buy this house and have virtually nothing to do it up with (it's our 'forever' house so I'm happy to live with it 'as is' for a few years till we 'come up for air'! lol) but I don't want to employ the 'cheap' plumber if it's gonna be crap and pipes burst or not work etc but the other plumber could just think i'm wet behind the ears etc........

Please advise me someone, you'll be a total rocking superstar!!!!!!
Now if that isn't an incentive to type a helpful reply then I don't know what is!?! .......oh, I know, I'll throw in a cuppa or a beer and a few jaffa cakes to boot! lol
Yours hopefully, Andrea :0)

Answer
MPfffffffff............

A lot going on here.

a) Standing pressure and operating pressure are _not_ the same thing. If you are on municipal water, the standing pressure in your system will be the same whether the operating pressure is high or low - what you perceive as 'low' pressure is mostly restrictions in the pipe from age, liming or other similar problems. Bottom line: the existing pipes will be able to take the pressure of a new system.

b) If you have iron, lead or galvanized pipes in your domestic water system (the stuff you drink and bathe in), yes, you should get rid of them (eventually - lead right away) as they will clog over time (and may already have) even if they do not fail from pressure. At the same time you do not have to do it all at once - you can do it as your budget permits. The second plumber is much more accurate on this aspect.

c) Cutting to the chase: Whether you get a combi or a single system for domestic hot water and another for heating is mostly a matter of philosophy and efficiency. Similarly if you choose a tankless combi or tankless single-purpose domestic water heater.

Now comes the advice part - got your several grains of salt?

Given that you will have two baths, one powder room, likely a dishwasher, likely a clothes washer and so forth, a domestic water heater with a moderate storage tank and high recovery is likely the most _convenient_ option. You can do this as a combi, conventional boiler with domestic water heating loop, or a separate high-recovery tank-type. The tankless domestic water heaters, while very efficient, require some significant flow to fire and modern sensing clothes washers and some similar dishwashers are not fully compatible with these types of units.

The single problem with a combi/conventional system is that they prioritize domestic hot water over house heating in most cases - which can be somewhat inconvenient in very cold climates - again pointing towards two separate systems.

Now: Two separate systems *will* be somewhat less efficient than a carefully designed single system. And at the same time, a true 'combi' system has a level of complexity and relatively high failure rate that somewhat balances the efficiency. The *most* efficient, *most* reliable single system will be a 'conventional' high-efficiency boiler with a domestic water loop to a super-insulated passive storage tank. These systems can supply a large house with as much hot water as needed with very little penalty (in excess of 90% efficiency as compared to standard domestic water heaters at about 40% or so). But they are far-and-away the most costly at the initial installation.

Two years ago, we purchased a house of similar size to yours with a 1947 oil-fired boiler and separate gas tank-type water heater. The boiler was 400,000 BTU and operated at 48% (net) efficiency. Replacing "in kind" would have cost us less than US$4,000 and we would have increased the boiler efficiency to about 60% (net). We opted to convert to natural gas, get rid of the separate tank-type heater and install a conventional 96% efficient gas boiler with a domestic hot water loop and super-insulated storage tank. It will deliver 80 gallons (302 liters) of hot water per hour at a 60F rise, but the storage losses are less than 2%/day. The boiler will deliver 220,000 BTU/H of heat (net) as compared to the original oil burner delivering 192,000. Cost to operate the new gas boiler at US$1.14/therm is $2.63/hour. With oil it would have been (assuming a new boiler) US$7.33/hour.

The system we installed cost us just over $9,800 installed. Assuming 600 hours of operation per season, the payback is around three years - but the first-cost is more than twice as much.

Is this a fair quote for a deck?

michael b

I live in Cincinnati, Oh.
My wife and I are looking to get a deck built. We have been quoted 3815$ for a 16x12 deck.
Here are the specifics:
- he will take care of all the permit "stuff" (it will be attached to our house; our kitchen sliding door is a pretty decent hop down to the grass)
- standard pressure treated wood will be used; he said he uses screws not nails
- there will be standard rails; nothing special/fancy (e.g. no benches or the like)
- the bottom will be enclosed; we have a 2 yr old baby
- one set of steps on the side (or wherever we want) going out to the yard
- he will seal it with our choice of color with a 5 year sealant

Sorry for the lack of quality details, I'm not Tim the Tool man.
The $3815 quote is for labor and materials.
The wood is pressure treated pine.

Answer
Concrete adds cost, digging to solid ground. Best to use hot dipped galvanized nails [like twice the price compared to elecrto plated stuff.] to assemble frame. Is the frame in beam pockets? Plastic coated screws for decking is better than galv. exterior screws. Drilling pilot holes will help prevent deck screws from eventually snapping. [rarely done] OR best SS screws no pilot. Hot dipped lag bolts to house. Then notching [if any] to attach the framing to the posts ]Hot dipped galvanized lags with washers there also [5/16'' dia. min 3/8" best]. Do the posts carry thru to support the railing. If you have a lot of guests, span spacing [12' direction] should be closer than 24 inch. 2x10 size there is best. Some of the green would is really weak. Needs to be hand selected. Three posts in the 16' direction. Use double 2x10 there. Also, remember green wood really needs to dry before coating. Then know, baby should not crawl around on treated wood until it is dry/ properly coated. The old stuff was copper arsenic, now it is chlorine based, I think. Look at the label and call the manufacturer. Some of that green wood is so wet, you get sprayed when it is cut. Get more than one bid, in a city or rural area? KInd of expensive, if rural and the cheap materials are used. IE air gun nails, galvanized deck screws. Smaller wood, Electro plated lags, no beam pockets or other support beyond the shear strength of a few air gun nails. A deck can last decades, or not so much...

Just some thoughts.

i have a rockworth 4hp pressure washer can i feed water straight to the pump from a tank?

Q.

Answer
As long as the tank water level stays higher than the pressure washer input.Otherwise your pump will run dry and void your warranty(also ruin your pump seals).

Can high pressure washers fill air in high pressure air tanks?

jacques[*]

Can these devices be used to fill high pressure air tanks?

Answer
Never heard of that. A high pressure washer blows water, not air. If you tried to run it without water, it would burn out the pump. You need an air compressor to fill an air tank (or another already filled air tank, I suppose).

my troy built pressure washer is not getting any pressure how do I fix it?

ACI Constr

It is a troy built honda 2600 psi power washer. It is a friend of mine and he is asking me to fix it. I don't know where to begin. I don't know if he left it running burned it up or what. How do I trouble shoot this problem.

Answer
If the motor runs but pump will not pressure up then the pump is no good. Some are rebuildable but if you need a new pump it will cost as much as a new washer..

What could be wrong with my pressure washer engine?

MS II

I have a 6 hp, 2600 psi pressure washer with a Honda motor that's about 6 years old. It sat all winter with gas in the tank and carburetor, and when I tried to use it a few weeks ago, it would only run on half-choke. Today, I took the gas tank and carburetor off (and took the carburetor apart), cleaned everything with carburetor cleaner, put everything back together, filled the tank with new gasoline, and changed the oil. After all that, the pressure washer will still only run on half-choke. I'm not a small engine mechanic, so if you are, and you have some suggestions, I'd love to read them and try them out. Thanks. PS. I know it would be easier to take it to a mechanic, but it's so much more fun to try it yourself first.

Answer
Take off exhaust at cylinder head, will it run ok now ,they are prone to a large build up of carbon in exhaust and exhaust port which causes a back pressure preventing it drawing in enough fuel but the half choke cures this .An old head would recognize the soft exhaust note and know what the trouble was,

Best cleaner to pressure wash a deck?

Butterfly

I'll be using bleach for the siding of the house. If I ask at Home Depot or Lowe's they will just try to sell me something. Wasn't sure if the bleach would harm the wood.

Answer
Glad you asked before doing. Bleach and other deck wash products tend to soften the wood so when you power wash you leave lines or "fur" in the boards. I've done at least 100 decks in my time, and I've found it best just to use the force of the water for an even smooth finish. Also it is best to use a real power washer, not a home owners special like those found at Home Depot. Go rent a 2500 p.s.i. at your local rental place, there only like $85. You will be so glad you did.

I am painting the concrete foundation around my house which has peeling paint. How do I prep and paint it?

trailhorse

I have to paint it on my home in order to close and get down payment assistance.

Answer
Sand blast method is the standard, you can also use a high power pressure washer to remove flaking paint. You can rent either one and in rental store the caters to construction.

Once removed go to Lowe's and or home depot and by water block paint.
What the realtor wants is the re Application of the water barrier. It is generally white but you can have the paint department add color. This waterproof paint acts as an additional barrier from moisture or mold to your walls of your sub basement and or crawlspace. This is by no means cheap. the water proofing is usually 70-130 for a five gallon container which doesn't cover two coats on most houses.
