What is best way to clean heavy deposit of oil and dust from my lawn mower engine etc.?

Lowell

I had a slow hydraulic leak and the oil cooler is covered as well as everything else. I don't have a pressure washer but could borrow one but need some kind of chemical maybe gas to cut the heavy oil deposit loose. I do have an Air compressor.

Answer
use Royal Purple cleaner, var sol, diesel, Mean Green degreaser, or any foaming de-greasers. You can find any of these at any auto parts house or Wal-Mart. Var sol or diesel works really well when you are wanting to soak parts.Mean Green works good if you use the concentrate without diluting. And all your foaming de-greasers work pretty well too. just spray it on and rinse it off a few minutes later. However, make sure you cover any part that doesnt need to get wet. What works really good for me is to go to the car-wash and use the pressure washer their with the setting on "tire cleaner".

What is the best way to clean an engine?

planning f

I have a 2001 Honda Accord and the engine is getting a little dirty. I want to clean it. I know that i shouldnt take a pressure washer to it cause certain parts you do not want to get wet. Whats the best way to clean it?

Answer
go to parts store, by some engine degreaser, it comes in a big aerosol can, with the engine cold, spray it on nd let it sit for about 10-15 minutes, either with a water hose or a pressure washer rinse it off.
using a pressure washer wony hurt anything as long as you dont get too close to actually break plastic parts, or blow stuff off. also if you use hose or pressure washer, make sure you dont spray water into carb or throttle body.

Which pressure washer should I buy to use around the yard?

pressure washer gas on Pressure Washer Accessories and Parts
pressure washer gas image

sirdufus69

I've looked at a few websites and see that I can get gas powered washers for upwards of $400 and also get small electric ones for as low as $80. I understand that the big difference seems to be the pressure that each puts out (PSI) but that's all I understand.

Can I get a compressor so I can say attach a paint sprayer, a tire inflator and then attach a head so I can pressure wash? Or do I have to get a compressor for paint and air and then a pressure washer as well? I'm mostly interested in the washing part but would be nice to have an all in one solution if that is even available?

Here is what I want to do...wash the cars, RV, kids bikes, driveway, vinyl siding on the house and basic yardwork type of chores.

Please help me figure out what to buy?

Answer
If it were me... I'd go to the local rental equipment shop and ask the guy in charge of what he thinks. Why - because he would be the one very familiar with what you'd be looking for. As that's what he rents, and is very knowledgeable about.

What is E10 gasoline and is it the same as regular unleaded gas?

David

I have a gas pressure washer that says on the gas tank to use E10 gasoline. Where do you buy that kind of gas?

Answer
E10 = 10% ethanol content. The pressure washer does not REQUIRE E10, the sticker only means that it's okay to use E10.

Some people will tell you that E10 is bad for engines, but don't you believe it. I've been driving the same vehicle for over 20 years and fueled it with up to E20, it runs just fine on all of them. It can complicate matters when you store the engine, however.

For best results, at the end of the season drain the tank and run the engine until it dies of fuel starvation. Then add a little fuel stabilizer to the tank and restart it for a few seconds to get the stabilizer into all the passages of the carb. This will prevent varnish forming in those tiny little nooks and crannies will the engine sits idle for months on end.

shyguy8413

Is just the plain green okay?

Answer
According to your owners manual, It could be Green, or it could be Orange, depending on which engine the vehicle is equipped with.
You can download your complete Owners manual (in pdf format) by clicking the link below:

http://www.motorcraftservice.com/pubs/content/~WOWTAU/~MUS~LEN/41/98tauog1e.pdf
(Or submit year/make/model from Ford Owner website)

See the chapter on adding coolant , starting on page 138
_____copy of page 138-140_____
Adding engine coolant
Do not put engine coolant in the reservoir
for the windshield washer fluid.
Do not mix conventional green coolant, orange
coolant or recycled coolants together in your
vehicle. Use only the type of coolant that your
vehicle was originally equipped with . If you
are unsure which type of coolant your vehicle
requires, contact your local dealer.
If sprayed on the windshield, engine coolant could
make it difficult to see through the windshield.
When the engine is cool, add a 50/50 mixture of
engine coolant and water to the engine coolant
reservoir. Add straight water only in an emergency,
but you should replace it with a 50/50 mixture of
coolant and distilled water as soon as possible.
Check the coolant level in the coolant reservoir the
next few times you drive the vehicle. If necessary,
add enough of a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water
to bring the liquid level to the fill line on the
reservoir.
If you must remove the coolant reservoir cap, follow
these steps to avoid personal injury:
1. Before you remove the cap, turn the engine off
and let it cool.
2. When the engine is cool, wrap a thick cloth
around the cap. Slowly turn cap counterclockwise
until pressure begins to release.
3. Step back while the pressure releases.
4. When you are sure that all the pressure has been
released, use the cloth to turn it counterclockwise
and remove the cap.
Change your engine coolant according to the
appropriate schedule listed in the âService Guideâ.
Before adding engine coolant, check the color of the
coolant in your vehicle.
For vehicles with green coolant, use Ford
Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ-19549âAA (in
Canada, Motorcraft CXC-8âB) or an equivalent
premium engine coolant that meets Ford
specification ESE-M97B44âA.
Do not add orange coolant or recycled coolant
to your vehicle originally equipped with
conventional green coolant .
For vehicles with orange coolant, use Ford
Extended Life Engine Coolant F6AZ-19544âAA or a
DEX-COOLt equivalent that meets Ford
specification WSS-M97B44âD.
Do not add conventional green coolant or
recycled coolant to your vehicle originally
equipped with orange coolant.
Do not use alcohol or methanol antifreeze or any
engine coolants mixed with alcohol or methanol
antifreeze. Do not use supplemental coolant

additives in your vehicle. These additives may harm
your engine cooling system. The use of an improper
coolant may void your warranty of your vehicleâs
engine cooling system.
Recycled engine coolant
Ford Motor Company recommends that Ford and
Lincoln-Mercury dealers use recycled engine coolant
produced by Ford-approved processes.
For vehicles with green coolant, not all coolant
recycling processes produce coolant which meets
Ford specification ESE-M97B44âA, and use of such
coolant may harm engine and cooling system
components.
For vehicles with orange coolant, no recycling
process has been approved at this time and use of
such coolant may harm engine and cooling system
components.
Always dispose of used automotive fluids in a
responsible manner. Follow your communityâs
regulations and standards for recycling and disposing
of automotive fluids.

the water in the washing machine ran over?

Sika

the water in the washing machine ran over and the leaked from the bottom...how fatal is it? please help
i the hose the the bowl run and it overflow for about half an hour

Answer
If your washer is overfilling, then you have a bad water level switch, or the pressure hose to the switch has been disconnected. Look at the water level switch and the hose that comes to it, the other end of the hose should be connected to an air dome located on the outside and bottom of the tub. The air is compressed as the water fills the tub. This raises the pressure and activates the water level switch. Check to see if the hose between the air dome and the switch is connected and that there are no holes in the tube. If the tube is intact, you probably have a bad water level switch. It will have to be replaced.

ON top loading machines, this is not too complicated, the switch is located on the back of the control panel.

The other possiblility is that you have a bad water fill valve. The fill valve may have something stuck in it like sand, normally this cannot be cleaned, it must be replaced. If something is sticking the water fill valve, it could flood again.

The washer should run normally after it is dried completely.

CAUTION: Always unplug an appliance before working on it. Electricity is dangerous and can cause severe injury or death.

stuck jeep lug nuts?

pressure washer 101 on ... Chore Master 5 1/2 HP 2400 Psi Honda Pressure Washer - CV2400-4MHC
pressure washer 101 image

reebius

I have an 2002 grand cherokee with the chrome capped lug nuts. 2 of the lug nuts were stuck so I tried wd40 and then tried heating them. Well, the lug wrench ripped the chrome cap off of both of them exposing just the nuts underneath. Would a tire shop be able to take them off? thanks

Answer
With the other nuts removed, places too much pressure on the remaining ones.

1. Replace the other nuts tight, then place the lug wrench on the stubborn one..... then using a jack or a can, let the lug wrench set on the jack or can.

2. With your foot; stand on the end of the lug wrench, with a little down force as if you would jump (just a little - becareful not to fall)....bump it a few times with your weight. After a few seconds you will hear a squeak, and feel it move a little.
With that one broken loose.....get the next one the same way.

3. With the two stuck nuts now loose, loosen the remaining 3 nuts you tightened.....then you can remove the nuts and your tire.

Note: If because the chrome cover is off of one lug, with a washer or piece of metal or even a dime you can "shim" up you inside the socket of the wrench so it will fit the lug nut "tight."

Using your weight to loosen the nuts is a safe way to break loosen any tough nuts.

YOU will not need too but: you can use the jack to jack up the lug nut wrench to loosen a nut if your handicapped.

You should always loosen or "squeak" all the nuts before you remove any nuts.......when you take all but one off at a time...the last one has so much pressure on it....it won't go anywhere with out a lot of grunting and possibly damage to the nut or the "stud" the nut bolts up on.

So go back to square one... and tightly replace the nuts and try again as above and I'm sure you will be happy to see it will become easy to remove.......

Its just "tire shop" 101, don't feel bad lots of folks do the same thing.........

Ok so my husband just found his foster father after 13 years of not speaking to him. The foster father had had a brain tumor and they got into an argument and he kicked my husband out at 16. My husband is now 29. About a week after we had contacted him for the first time he told us that he wanted to give us a house in Ohio. He wanted to give it ti us. No rent, no mortgage payments he had fully paid for the house already. The house is 101 years old but looks to be in good shape.I would be moving 500 miles away from family to move up there next to him. He swears the he would take car of anything that we would need ( dishwasher, washer dryer, new paint job, and new carpet and anything that were to fail while we were living there) the only thing he wanted was for us to pay the taxes ( which i CAN afford) and if we ever decided to sell the house he wanted half of the profit. I dont know whether to be leary of this of not. It is the person who raised my husband mose of his life.
How would you find out if the house had any loans or leins on it or if there were back owed taxes?
What kind of steps would you take moving like this. He wants us to move by November 1st because he says he doesnt want the house vacant for an extended period of time and that if we didnt want it he was going to sell it.

Answer
Let him sell it. Don't allow him to pressure you into making a major move and incur major expenses until you are certain. Remember, after moving in to this house, the foster father may use this "gift" as leverage to guilt his way back into your husband's life.

Get the house appraised by a trusted local house appraiser, and take the appraiser's report seriously. Share a copy of the report with the father-in-law, and ask him to complete the improvements and repairs *before* you move in. Find out who his lenders are (banks, credit unions) and visit them to find out what you can about any debts owed on the property and house.

Last thought: if the foster father is truly giving you the house, then he must give up any ownership of the house to you. Taking care of your living expenses is a major red flag-- letting him do so is a way of making you dependent on him.

How to set up a go kart engine?

person

Hi i am currently making a go kart and I'm looking for an engine. I decided to pick out a 2 stroke 49cc pocket bike engine basically because its cheap. First of all how fast do u think it will go with a 120 lbs body on it? Second how would i hook it up? Do i just need to buy a clutch for the engine like i would for a go kart or buy a transmission for it? By the way if a 49 cc engine is way to slow for me dont call me an idiot i don't know much about engines.

Answer
Yeah the 49cc engine will be way too small.

You want something like 195 to 215cc Horizontal Shaft (shaft sticking out the side, not the bottom) Gas Engine. Like used on pressure washers, wood splitters, etc.

You can buy off brands, new for $100-140.

My kids and I built 2 karts a couple of summers ago and used brand new harbor freight 196cc 6.5 HP engines. Got them on sale for $90 each.

Northern tools and Max tool also has those types of engines.

Then you put a Centrifugal Clutch on the engine and a sprocket on the axle, use a chain to connet the two together.

MFG supply has great prices on go kart parts, chain, clutch, etc.

Your speed will depend on your gear ratio (number or teeth on clutch and number of teeth on axle gear)

There is no transmission on karts so you have to find middle ground. Gear it too high and it will reach very high top speeds 40, 50, 60 mph, put will not start off very fast, will not pull up hills, may even need a push start to get it going.

Gear it to low and you will accel very hard and fast, maybe even smoke the tores on pavement but you will limit your top speed alot.

Here's a few pics of the ones we built.
The big long, wide red one is geared higher, it don't pull hills very well but will start off ok and tops out at about 34 mph pulling my 275 lbs butt around.

The black one is geared lowered, tops out at about 18 mph put will spin those big tires, and even lift front tires off the ground starting off every now and then

Pressure sprayer and the mold and mildew?

Hairy Terr

I am thinking about buying a pressure sprayer that has 2000 psi but I want to know that it will take mold and mildew off my driveway and walkway. I don't want one that's just going barely do the job or not at all with a 2000 psi one. To go to a 2500 it's about $100 more dollars so if I can get the job done with the 2000 psi then great. Thank You.

Answer
Go for the extra pressure, you could always back it down.
Use a little bleach and a brush (on a broom stick) to agitate and loss en the mold.
Then give it a blast with the pressure washer.
Don't forget to wear goggles and gloves. Good Luck

Is it safe and effective to clean your car engine with a steam cleaner?

pressure washer youtube on Pressure Washers
pressure washer youtube image

Gregory D

I've been searching for an easy way to clean my car engine and I actually found quite a few videos on YouTube of people cleaning their engines with a steam cleaner. I want to know whether this method actually works effectively and whether or not there is any risk of damaging any of the engine components. If so, is there any way to prevent this type of damage such as covering up the components.

Answer
I'm pretty sure you're not familiar with what a heavy duty shop "steam jenny" is. They use very caustic hot water -steam soap solutions pressured by a high pressure compressor and cost thousands of dollars. They have so much pressure they'll peal the paint off a car or car engine. They're dozens of times more powerful than a standard wand type car wash or hardware store power-washers. The soapy water is much hotter and nozzle on the end of the discharge pipe is so big and hot water being discharged could knock a person to the ground. You must wear large protective rubber gloves, boots and goggles.

Your best bet is to take the car to a standard wand type car wash and clean everything under the hood with high pressure soap and clear water rinse. This deal is perfectly safe and you'll not have to cover anything up. You'll be more than happy with the result. I've been cleaning motor compartments for 45 years using the local car wash. Never once did I have a starting issue after washing the engine and compartment.

To heck with nasty smelling Gunk and the yellow sewer stink in your driveway.

How can I fix a possible leak in the wall?

nowisthatn

How can I fix a possible leak in the wall?
My mom's been complaining that she smelled something weird, and occasionally, I noticed it smelled kind of musty. Today, I was looking for the source of the smell, and I was near the wall and heard a bubbling sound. I put my hand to the wall, and found a soft spot. It wasn't wet, but very soft. I think if I applied more pressure I would've poked a hole in the wall. The spot is relatively small, about an inch or two in diameter, and about two or three inches from the floor. Parts of the carpet feel slightly damp.

So part of my issue is that I live in an attached house. The wall where this is happening is connected to my neighbor's wall. I know the layout of her house, and it's likely that either her washing machine or dishwasher is very close to the affected wall on my side, and my mom has said that she hears a bubbling sound every time my neighbor does laundry. I don't know if the leak is coming from her house or mine.

Another problem is that my mom really don't have the money for a plumber. My father just passed, and my mom's disabled, so she can't work. I'm a full time college student, and now I need to take on the half of the bills my dad used to pay. I only have a minimum wage job (though in the process of looking for something better). So when I say money is tight right now, I really mean it. That's why I want to fix it sans the help/expenses of a plumber. I'm pretty handy around the house, but I've never dealt with a leak before. Basically I'm just looking for some DIY advice. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

Answer
The first thing you need to do is talk to your neighbor and find out if there is a water problem on her side of the wall. If her plumbing is causing the problem it should be her responsibility to fix it. That includes damage done to your house. Her homeowners liability insurance should cover the damage to your house. When you talk to the neighbor ask to inspect the connections to the washing machine. It might be something as simple as a hose washer. If the leak is not visible from her laundry room it's back to your house. Cut into the wall with a utility knife and expose the pipes. I am assuming the walls are plaster or sheetrock. Once the leaking pipe is accessible It should be pretty easy to fix. If you don't feel safe doing the repair it is a quick job for a plumber at this point. You will have done half of the work by locating the problem. If you want to attempt it yourself it should be easy to find a video lesson on soldering a pipe by searching youtube. After that, keep looking for a video lesson on drywall or plaster repair.

What pressure washer psi do I need to primarily wash vehicles & maybe 2 story houses?

pressure washer 3100 psi on Homelite Honda 3,100-psi Pressure Washer > Handyman Club of America
pressure washer 3100 psi image

friendly_a

I am starting up a mobile auto detailing business and have been getting by with just a basic 1800psi electric pressure washer. I've now started doing boats and rv's as well as sometimes doing wooden porches, decks, driveways and single story houses. I need more power definitely but am not sure what to get right now. Some people say 3000psi is needed to be able to wash a 2 story house using those long extension wands but if you are using a tall ladder then that doesnt really matter. But some say to clean a house only about 400-600psi is really needed. I definitely need more power but also need something that can indeed provide the power I need to clean the 2 story houses while also allowing me to safely tone down the pressure enough so I can use it to wash cars and recreational vehicles which will be its primary use. Right now Im looking at the units from Sams Club which are: a Black max 2400psi with a honda engine for only $200, a Black Max 2700psi for $300 or a Simpson 3100psi with Honda engine for $380. Which one would be the best fit for my needs? Thanks!

Answer
Definitely the 3100 psi Honda....There will be times where you'll be glad you had those extra psi's...Also, it would be a very good idea to purchase the extension wand for your safety. Climbing up & down a wet ladder is far from safe. A descent extension wand would usually run you about $100.00 +...However, well worth the investment...Best of luck..

I want to get my house pressure washed. I don't know of any companies off hand and I don't know if I can rent a machine.

Answer
Yea you can definately rent a pressure washer. I'm guessing you dont live in downtown detroit so i dont know where to tell you to go. My best advice is to grab your yellow pages and look under rentals. You can rent it for a few hours for dirt cheap. It is easy to do as well as long as you don't mind getting a little dirty. You can buy some soap that you can spray onto the house and then hook up the presssue washer and spray off the house. If you want to get a contractor to do it i would say go to yahoo! and in the search page type and type:

pressure washing + (your city),mi

Then click the link just down from the top that says local results for pressure washing near (your city),mi. It will have a list in order of distance from closest to farthest and a way to contact them... hope this helps!

I have a pressure washer that is Ridgid 3300 psi and i am replacing the motor but i do not know how to remove the water pump and i was wondering if there is any one that knows how to and if they can tell me how they did it and what tools to use. thank you for any more information please email me
estr5160@gmail.com

Answer
It's really just removing the mounting bolts on the pump and pulling it free of the engine. There should be some set screws in the drive shaft you will have to loosen. if you don't see these, find a hole in the drive shaft cover and pull the starter cord a little at a time to rotate the shaft, These holes are there to access the set screws. If you are still having a hard time, you may have to gently break the drive shaft free, check my source on this process.

Best Pressure Washer Setup for Less Than $300?

I'm looking for a pressure washer that I can use for cement driveways, decks, etc. I also am looking to get a flat surface cleaner. I have tried looking on the Costco since I heard they sold some website but I couldn't find them. I also don't want a junk piece of plastic. Thanks for the help.

Answer
You won't find a commercial grade pressure washer for less then $900. Anything with a pump that mounts underneath the motor is considered a home owner use pressure washer and won't hold up to consistent use. Plus when they do breakdown, they are more expensive to fix than what you paid for them.

Grainger sells Mi-T-M, which is a quality pressure washer. Home Depot's sells a high end Dewalt pressure washer with a Cat Pump.

Do research and talk to your local pressure washer distributor to make sure you get a quality machine.

Answer
Any small-engine repair shop should be able to help you. Failing that, Coleman has a customer-service website.

Coleman pressure washer- Anybody have non-working one? I need a pump part?

Old enough

Coleman no longer makes pressure washers. I broke a very small part off my pump. Before you send your broken washer to the dump, I would be happy to buy just this piece I need or your entire non-working pressure washer if you are close to SF Bay area. Mine is the 4hp model but I believe all the pumps were the same.
I erred in my original post. The part I need is for the water distribution manifold (adjusting screw) and not the pump. The pump works fine and there is no mfg name on it so it must be proprietary.

Answer
the pump was NOT made by Coleman. there should be a manufacturers name on the pump. contact Coleman and see if they can give you the name of the manufacturer of the water distributation manifold.
