1) Print first aid information on a single page. Include phone numbers for hospitals and national numbers such as the poison control center. Sell them door-to-door. Since you are located it a tough area, you might even inclued the number for a local UN representative.

2) Speak with neighbors. Offer to clean around, and under, the washer and dryer, with special emphasis on getting out the built-up dust in the dryer's exhaust vent. Include information from your local fire department about the risk of fire from accumulated lint now remaining in the vent tube.

3) Look up stocks that have paid dividends every year for over eighty years. I assume there is a stock market operating somewhere over there, so stock brokers are in need of clients. This means they have paid through recessions and the big depression. Sell this information to adults as a news service. (If you try to offer investment advice, you will be breaking the law. This information should be sold as news.)

4) Call investment professionals in your area, if there are any. Call life insurance salesmen in your area, too. That is, if companies will still write policies over there. Offer to clip the press releases printed in your local papers (especially the business press). Tape each release to a single sheet of binder paper. Look up the phone number of the person in that news release. Sell the information to one agent for five dollars per person after he makes his first sale; one dollar per person before that first sale. You can even raise the price to ten dollars per person after the third sale. This payment arrangement offers the salesman the opportunity to earn from your efforts without going broke. It also allows you to establish a clientele.

5) Learn how to set a sprinkler system timing clock. Go door-to-door offering to re-set the clocks as the seasons change. Keep the names handy, as you will return every quarter for resets. Fifty clients once each quarter, youngster, and you can start making plans for college.

6) Offer to drain the hot water heater of the sediment. Since one of the chief causes of HWH failure is the build-up of the sediment, you can save your clients from replacing their water heaters soon. You can also offer to leave an inexpensive hose attached to the drain valve. Then, when you return every six months, you only need take the far end of the low pressure hose out of the garage, turn on the spigot, and let five gallons out. Leave that thin hose extended and against the wall of the garage.

7) Offer to read a chapter of the Holy Bible to families in the area. They can even work in the kitchen, as an example, while you read.

OK. You have a few of my thoughts. And a little bit of my humor.

Are there any jobs in Portland, Oregon NE for teenagers?

Markila

I'm 14, and I would like to have a job. Except I don't know any where. I've asked people older than me, but they've said no. Thank you for any answers!

Currently, unemployment is at a very high rate: about 8.5% officially in Oregon and realistically around 23% nationwide. There are many adults, parents, college graduates, artists, and others who want to work but who cannot find enoughâor any at all. This makes almost every "entry level" job to be in high demand: employers can expect high standards for new employees because many people are available.

Unfortunately, you are subject to minimum wage which means that anyone who employs you must pay at least minimum wage which is $8.95 per hour (in Oregon) since January 1st. While many people believe that minimum wage is a good idea, yours is a prime example of how it hurts workers. Unless you have valuable skills, no one is inclined to pay an inexperienced, unskilled worker that much. Maybe receiving $5 per hour for office gopher would be fine with you and many potential employers would gladly pay that for certain kinds of work. However, that rate of pay is illegal.

There are several things you can do to earn some money and circumvent the minimum wage law. Babysitting and mowing lawns are time-honored teenage work. Offer to mow lawns near where you live for a reasonable amountâlike $10 for a small yard, and $40 for a huge one. This time of year many people with houses do outdoor chores which are a strain for middle age and older adults: rototilling, spreading mulch, pulling stumps, fertilizing, sowing new lawns, cleaning roofs and driveways.

If you have access to a power washer, rototiller, or garden tools and are willing to do this kind of work, go door to door at the nicer houses which could use some work and ask. Bid an enticing fixed price upfront for the work: "Hello, my name is Joe and I noticed your vegetable garden could use rototilling and preparation for Spring seeding. I am willing to do that for $15. How about it?"

Expect to hear "no" a lot with this approach, so keep trying. It is sometimes hard to know if you are asking too much or if they really don't need the work doneâor maybe they don't like something about you or your appearance. If you get a long streak of "no" (like ten in a row), ask a few what you can do to win their business.

To get any repeat businessâthe very best kindâbe sure you know what you are doing. Damaging tools, blowing little holes in driveways with a pressure washer, mowing flowerbeds, or making the sod lumpy are not going to make happy customers. Be sure to ask someone knowledgeable (like your parents or parents of friends) for instructionâmaybe formal lessonsâfor things you do not know well.
