Washing car with power washer?

Quovadis

I've been thinking about this for a while and was wondering if this would be a practical way to wash my car?

Obviously the water pressure would be my biggest concern, but other than that I can't think of any other trade-offs.

Answer
pressure washer is overkill for a good paint job its a great way to strip paint right off the car if you are not paying attention. The best thing is a 5 gallon bucket mostly full of car wash soap and a big soft brush you use regular hose pressure to get the worst of the crud off and then starting at the top wash down using lots of suds and water any dirt on the car. I do half the car and then dump the water and fill the bucket half full again with fresh water and soap with frequent dippings of the brush this keeps the dirt and grit in the bottom of the bucket and does not scratch the paint. you do not really need a pressure washer and its not a good idea unless you have experience.

Why would a car stall after having the engine washed with a pressure washer?

Ryan B

My brother recently test drove a 2001 dodge intrepid after the used car dealer power washed the engine. It stalled on us 3 times while test driving but it couldn't have been the battery because it started right back up with no problem. The dealer thought he may have gotten some plugs wet while washing, so he replaced them the next morning and it ran fine for a few days then started stalling again. What would cause this?

Next, I test drove a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited after the engine was pressure washed and it stalled about 6 times during our drive. Again, it couldn't have been the battery because it started up immediately.

Both cars drove fine with the exception of stalling. They were both washed in garages but it's still winter in iowa so it would have been forty degrees in either garage at the very most. The only common denominators i can identify is that both engines were washed in the cold and they are both made by Chrysler. Please help.

Answer
Typically pressure washing an engine is not a good idea unless you make it a point to cover all of the electronics which can be a task and most people will not do it. I don't think it is the make of the car that is the problem. It may be the salesman trying to cover up a problem by washing down the engines. When I clean an engine, I use low pressure water, such as a regular water hose with some all purpose grease cutter. Then i wait just a few minutes for the majority of the water to drip off and crank it up and let it run for a few minutes until the remainder of the water is evaporated. But, I have strayed away from your question, yes, if the pressure washer is the common denominator, then pressure washing is the problem. Are the vehicles from the same car dealer? If so, go somewhere else. I would never buy a vehicle that stalled during a test drive. A vehicle is a big investment. Therefore, it must perform perfectly for me to purchase it.
