Can MC Rotators cause Water Hammer?

dmuldawer

A few weeks ago, I added MC Rotators to my existing sprinkler system. Three days after they were installed, I was awakened by an incredibly loud pulsing. The sprinkler people told me this was called water hammer and said they could fix it. When they came out again, they opened the valve so the water pressure wasn't as intense. That fixed the problem for about a week but now the problem has started again. The sprinkler people refuse to come out again, and say that their system is working perfectly and it's a problem with the city's water pressure.

This is the first time in twenty years I've experienced this problem and it seems awfully coincidental that it happened just when the MC Rotators were installed.

The sprinkler people have been in business for 40 years and have plumbing licenses and backgrounds in engineering. Are they telling me the truth or is it something that's their responsibility to fix?

One question that comes to mind is: what is the water pressure? If it's under 80 psi they can't really squawk about it. You can get a cheap pressure gauge that screws onto a hose bid for about $10 at HD and find out. If it's much over 80 psi, you might consider getting a pressure reducing valve installed on the incoming water. If it's over 100 psi, then consider it even more. And if these guys are licensed plumbers and think that its a pressure problem, why didn't they suggest installing a PRV? It's a code requirement when water pressure is above 80 psi.

Note that a PRV will often require an expansion tank installed near the water heater to prevent the relief valve from dripping.

In my experience, the most common cause of something like you describe is a loose washer (or other part) acting like the reed in a saxophone. That can make a more hellacious noise than you've ever believe.

Very Noisy water Pipes?

S0methingc

Hi,

I've recently noticed that every time my washing machine runs and it's taking in water, there's a loud noise coming from the pipes. I'm not sure if it's air pressure or what not but it's a really loud boom that goes on and off every 2-3 seconds.

Anyways, I was wondering what is causing it? Also is it dangerous, as in is there a possibility that the pipes will burst? Also, is there any way to fix it without spending hundreds of dollars on a plumber?

Thanks!

Answer
It sounds like one or both of the inlet solenoid valves in your washer is (are) chattering. Note whether the sound occurs when you set the washer for cold water, or hot water only. The faulty valve will make the pipes chatter with the corresponding water setting.

What's happened is your washer solenoid valve has gotten sticky, preventing the solenoid from fully engaging the valve, so the valve just chatters. This pressure pulse train is felt (and heard) down the pipes.
