I have no idea what's going on. I just moved in a house, mid-century old. And I think it has all sort of water piping problems. It makes a lot of banging noises when using boiler and laundry.

But my concern is this dishwasher, which is broken and totally rusted inside. Never used it. I knew it was broken when I bought the house. But one night, suddenly the whole kitchen floor was flooded and the water went right down to my basement and destroyed my artworks...

It felt like 80 degrees! in the kitchen and it is cold March in New York! It was definitely hot water and there was wood damage [white streaks] on the cabinets near it. There was heavy condensation on windows but no water dripping from the cabinets.

The countertop was covered with water too. I had to use all the towels I had.

Anyway few days before that, the garbage disposal stopped working. I don't know if it's related or not but the undersink cabinet was flooded as well.

There were warm water sitting in the dishwasher too. I never used it since it was old, broken, and cannot shut it as the handle is broken.

It was someone else who found the kitchen this way and had called me. She was not there whatever happened and said there was no water in the sink. So... it wasn't from running water from the faucet. What happened here? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This was a scary experience for me!
what might have caused it?
Geeta Fookata - Here's the photo to show the discoloration that looked like rust and also around the trimmings. It makes noises when you open it.

You went ahead and accused me. And falsely accused me of making multiple accounts. This is my only Yahoo account. I reported you because you falsely accused me of making multiple accounts and would be glad to allow admins to configure from my computer address [I doubt they would waste their time] and from the looks of it, you have been harassing others. If you feel that a person who asks the question is wasting time, I suggest you not do the same and simply report instead of being what you're against. Don't waste your time on here.

Thanks for the informative answers, everyone!

Answer
Generally most dish washers have only one water supply line and should have a separate shut off.

Since the house is falling apart its a good idea to shut off the water to the home and replace the broken shut off valves for the 5 buck replacement costs its not worth the thousands of dollars in damages to art or anything else. Your garbage disposal is not related to the dish water unless its Jerry rigged into it Sounds like you bought a property that needs major remodeling of plumbing its probably the reason why the previous owner sold it to you With out looking at it cause and effects is hard to gauge You should just call a plumber and have them look at it and the rest of the plumbing maybe they can pressure test the system. At this point You have broken water shut off valves until you replace them expect lots of damage to your home and contents. Those valves are the only thing preventing future damages

hope it helps
