what does an unloader stem do on a pressure washer.?

Answer
An unloader circulates water when you let go of the trigger gun so that the pump does not lock up when the water has no where to go. It is also what sets the pressure for the machine.

One thing to keep in mind with an unloader is that since the water is constantly recirculating in the pump, it starts to heat up. Never leave a machine in bypass for too long since the water will get hot enough to damage the pump.

Can I use a flow sensing unloader on my pressure washer and still regulate pressure with a tip?

I want to use a flow sensing unloader on my pressure washer. The flow sensing unloader will not keep the system pressurized when the trigger is released. The problem is that i have read on one site that you cant regulate the pressure using a different sized tip on a machine with a flow sensing unloader. I KNOW that you can regulate pressure with a tip on a pressure sensing unloader, and cant see why you couldn't with a flow sensing unloader, but with a pressure sensing unloader id have to pump my system up to 4000 psi when the trigger is released. If i were to turn DOWN the maximum pressure with this type of unloader, id be losing volume which i cant really spare with a 4GPM pump. The use of a flow sensing unloader, if it works the way i think it should, will allow me to regulate pressure with the tip, and still get full flow and then once the trigger is released, all the pressure in the line disappears. This would mean that my system would never see any more pressure than i want at any given time. My main concern is the heater coil.

Answer
If the flow sensing unloader operates by sensing liquid movement, then pressure should have no effect, as long as it is properly rated for the system pressure. You should still be able to regulate system pressure with the tip; I would purchase the flow unloader that was rated at least 25% higher for system pressure than what I expected my max system pressure to be. i.e. - 100 psi system pressure means unloader rated for 125 psi working pressure.
