what should I have checked when taking a long road trip?

Kevin

I have a 92 cadillac sedan deville and I am goin on my first road trip from south carolina to new york and I don't know much about cars, so I wonder what should I have checked on the car. I know I am goin to change oil and balance and rotate tires, but what else should I have serviced? Please help!!

Answer
Check the following:
1) oil
2) tires & pressure
3) coolant level
4) brake fluid level
5) front & back lights
6) drive belts for wear or cracks
7) washer reservoir
8) wiper blades

Then relax and enjoy the drive!

What should I do to my 1985 impala before I drive it to Myrtle Beach from Rochester New York?

Chris

The car only has 65,000 miles on it and rides very well

Answer
If you've owned it for a while and know it runs well then just do what you would do with any other car for a long road trip. I just sold an '83 Cavalier that I used to pull a small trailer between my house in West Virginia and South Carolina, about a 500 mile trip. I have a '94 Escort with 260,000 miles on it. I drive it regularly between the two houses. You know new cars break down too!

OK, check the tread on your tires and the air pressure. Check your fluids; oil, radiator, brake and power steering. And don't forget you windshield washer fluid. Keep your windshield clean so you have good vision. If you don't have one, an auto club like AAA or All State (mine) is a great idea.

Don't put a lot of emphasis on the '85. Take a look at the broke down cars along the road. Most of them seem to be newer cars. We have 4 vehicles. None newer than '97 and I wouldn't hesitate to take any one of them on the road. In fact we will be taking our '96 Rav 4 to Virginia Beach next month.

So make sure you have checked out the Impala and enjoy the ride to Myrtle. I would rather ride in an '85 Impala than most cars of today.
