ATTN: PLUMBERS!!! Do "Fernco Hose Grips" actually work? Water sprays from my washers drain tube...?

ANH

When my washer drains water spews from the standpipe that the drain tube is placed in. It was snaked & I was told there was no blockage. The standpipe is 2'' & I was told that is too narrow... 3" is recommended. I bought a pvc flex coupling (2" - 1 1/2") and tightened it water tight. It worked in the sense there is no more kickback spewing out when the washer needs to drain. NEW PROBLEM... when creating the air/water tight seal from the washer tube to the standpipe it creates a vacuum like a siphon. Sometimes when I am trying to fill the washer to do a load the water will no hold due to the vacuum effect & I have to get back there & let the pressure off & the water fill, then get back there & tighten it again to avoid spewage. This = HASSLE!!! I read about a "Fernco Hose Grip" that has air intake holes but something like a check valve to prevent the water from coming out the holes. Do the actually work? What are the pros & cons? I put a pic of the part I am rreferencing Thanks for any help. Oh yeah, a new wider standpipe is out of the question at $2000 +.

Answer
The clamp gasket holes appear to go to the atmosphere. There is no mention of check valve on this style clamp. The line needs a vent to drain properly. The pipe size is correct. I suggest installing a spring loaded atmospheric vent. This mechanical vent fitting works like a check valve and is spring loaded and opens and closes by back pressure ( vacuum). Install a 'Y' fitting (pvc) vertically on existing riser drain. Clamp your air tight hose and adapter on top of 'Y' fitting. Install a 45degree fitting on the branch vertically looking up.Glue a 18" pipe with an 1 1/2" female adapter on the other end.Glue the pipe and adapter into the top of 45 deegree fiting. Teflon tape the mechanical vent thread and screw it into the female adapter. You might hear it suck a little air when washer is discharging but that is normal.

1 If I have an apartment sized washing machine and I am moving to a townhouse with a washer hookup can

janie

I use the single hose that fills it by buying a y hose and hooking it to the single hose so I can put one end in hot and one in cold.

2. Do I need any washers or does that come with the y hose. am they all on size fits all

3. Also do I need to so anything special to the drain hose.

4 How about dryer hose..are the the same size too

thanks for answering these 4 related questions

there is only one hose coming from the washer and there are two faucets

Answer
For any washer you only need a few items.

Electrical power --- 120 V

Water supply -- the single hose with an end that resembles a garden hose will screw right onto the tap coming from the wall in the townhome.

Water drainage --- you have a really big and tough water hose attached to your washing machine and it will connected to some sort of a a black PVC pipe fitting on the wall near where the washer hook up will be located. The downflow is usually very small opening b/c of the violent jarring caused by the high water pressure so it is usually anchored inside the wall and not readily noticeable.

Level your washing machine with the legs or else your machine will be unbalanced.

Otherwise, you are good to go.
